FOOTBALL.
TfMARQ r. TEMUKA. A Cup match took place in the Temuka Park on Saturday afternoon between teams representing Timarn and Temuka. Shortly after 3 o’clock Fitzgerald kicked off for Temuka, and the ball was immediately taken down into the Timarn quarters, where, after a series of scrums, the Timarn forwards, headed by Matheson, got a splendid dribbling rush on, and earned the bail into the Temuka twenty-fire when G Yelvin, by a neat kick relieved bia side. The game now became very fast-one of the fastest ever played on the ground. The Timarn backs were passing splendidly, but the tackling of Yelvin, McLeod, and Polaschek kept the visitors on the defensive. After some loose play Perry got the ball and qaickly passed to Jones, who secured the first try for Tunaru, the kick at goal hein* unsuccessful. From the kick out the lemuka forwards, headed by Fitzgerald, got on a good rush, but it was neatly stopped by Perry kicking out of touch The Blues soon got on the bail again, and carried it into Temuka’s twenty-five, when A. C. Matbeson got over the line, but be was collared by Velvm and Findlay before be touched the ball down, and a maul ensued, in which, after a hard struggle, Yelvin pulled Matheson into the field of play, brom the scram which resulted Temuka gradually worked their line clear and carried the ball well into tqe Tirparq twenty-five, when halftupe was called. Matheson then kicked off for Timaru, and some very good play was shown on both sides, McLeod making two or three very pretty runs, m which he looked very much like scoring. Timaru now did their best to increase the score, Jameson, J ones, and Perry doing some
▼•ry good work at passing, but the splendid play of Temuka kept them at bay. The Blues now got another rush on, and Mathesou picked up the ball and looked much like scoring, when he was neatly grassed by Storey, but Jameson, following tip, secured the second try for Timaru. The kick at goal, however, proved unsuccessful. The Temuka forwards agained warmed up, and some very good play ensued, in which Carr, Brosnahan, and Findlay showed up very prominently. Ihe game still continued to be very fast, and when time was called the ball was well in Temuka quarters. For Timaru Perry, Jones, Jameson, and Matheson played well, and for Temuka it would be very hard to single them out, as they all played a sterling game, the most noticeable being Velvin, McLeod, storey, Carr, Austin, McCallum, Findlay, and Polaschek. This was by far the lightest team ever put into the field by Temuka, and the one which undoubtedly for years did it the most credit. Timaru averaged a stone heavier all round. Mr E. Smith umpired for Temuka, and Mr Kalaugher acted as referee. We are unable to give the name of the gentleman who umpired for Timaru.
