HER MAJESTY'S BIRTHDAY.
To-day is the 71st birthday of Her Moat Gracious Majesty, Queen Victoria. The banks and most public offices will be closed in honor of the occasion, but the public generally will celebrate the event on Monday next. At Temuka the volunteers will parade at 9 a.m. at the drill shed. From there they will march to the park, where a feu dejoie will be fired. All members are expected to attend this parade, and defaulters, unless a reasonable excuse is made, will be disqualified from firing. From the park an adjournment will be made to the range, where the birthday prizes will ha competed for. These comprise a number of useful and ornamental articles, subscribed for by the tradesmen of the town ap4 othpr friends of the corps, and, granting a fine day, an interesting competition may he looked for. There are prizes enough for all competing, Corporal G. Levens, who has been entrusted with the work of canvassing for the past 22 years having used his eloquence to advantage, but of course, honour and glory are to be counted in where volunteering is conearned, ft is to be hoped, therefore, that all able will make a point of being present. In the evening the annual Volunteer Ball will take place, which is a fixture anxiously looked forward to by lovers of dancing, A yery nice programme has been arranged, and at the supper interval the prizes will be distributed. The ball committee have care that the fioor and music tljose adjuncts to the dancers enjoyment shill be on the list.' ‘ j j In the afternoon a football match between teams from the Cambridge (Christchurch) Club, and the local club will take place in the park. The visitors are expected to arrive by the
special tram, leaving by express at mght. They will be entertained by the home team at the Wallingford Hotel. At WOODBXJBX, there will be a picnic in connection with the Salvation Army, the scene of which will be the Woodbury Park in the evening a Hosanna Meeting is announced to take place at half-past seven. This is to be followed by a cake and sandwich banquet. The admission is fixed at a low and a large attendance is anticipated, At
GERALDINE, no special attractions are announced but the day will be observed as a close holiday.
