TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
The monthly meeting of theTimaru Harbor Board was held last Wednesday. Present Messrs E. Acton (chairman), Talbot, Flatman, Teschemaker, Wilson, Manchester, Morris, Barker, Captain Sutter, and the Mayor of J imam’. J A letter was read from Messrs Perry and Perry intimating that the board had gained the Lyttelton case, and stating that they estimated the gain to be £45,000. Mr Teschemaker moved, and Mr Elatman seconded, “ That the board begs to congratulate their solicitors, Messrs Perry and Perry, upon the successful termination of the Shaw Saville law case, and to express their entire satisfaction with the care and ability bestowed by their solicitors upon the case.”—Carried unanimously, ihe standing committee recommend ol !? wi °S reductions Engineer’s staff—E. W. Marchant, engineer, salary to be £175, subject to three months notice. W. Parr, foreman, £2 15s per week. W. Collis and D. Chalmers, £2 10s pec week, Collis to receive 12s per day extra when diving. J. Blyth to be taken on the permanent staff at £2 10s per week. Collis, Chalmers, and Blyth, to be subject to one week’s notice. The wages of the dredge’s crew to remain as at present. In the harbourmaster’s staff the only alteration which the committee recommend is that the wages of E. H. Balsom be reduced to 6s a day for 7 days. The total saving ner annum to be effected by the above alteration will be i>26B 12s without taking info account the economy effected by extra labour. Messrs Teschemaker, Talbot, and Elatman urged that the engineers, Mr Marchant’s, salary should be £2OO, and moved a resolution to that effect, but it was lost, they alone voting for it. The engineer’s report was read. It stated that Ihe shingle had gone out 600 feet, and he would suggest not to interfere with it untill it had gone 1000. Efforts to raise the wreck of the Duke of feutherland with gun cotton proved a failure.—After some discussion it was decided to adopt the engineer’s suggestion not to interfere o Slagle until it had reached 1000 feet. The harbourmaster reported that 26 steamers and 6 sailing vessels had> arrived, and 26 steamers and 11 sailing vessels left. He complained of the very heavy range of sea still there, and suggested certain improvements, which were not entertained.
