REDUCTION OF POSTAGE.
London, May 1. It has been arranged that the proposed postal reductions shall take effect forthwith if the colonial governments are unanimous in the matter. If, however, there is a diversity of opinion, Mr Raikes, Postmaster-General, will adopt the views of the mnjority or of the leading colonies, New Zealand is to be treated separately, Wellington, May 2, To-day Mr Mitchelson, PostmasterGeneral for the colony, received a cable from tbe Agent-General in London containing the official announcement of Mr Raikes' proposals for the reduction of the colouial postal rates, The message was a short one merely stating that the proposal was to reduce the outward rate of postage from 6d to 2d, and tbat if the majority of tbo colonies were agreeable to such a reduction, it was probable that steps would shortly be taken to give effect to Mr Raikes' suggestions. The Agent. General impressed upon the Government the necessity of coming to a decision on the matter without any delay, and added that the replies from the various colonies were being anxiously awaited,
