On a division being taken the Irish Land Purchase Bill was read a second timti by 347 to 268, Mr Balfour said that it would be rash and dangerous to place it under the control of county councils. He was not opposed to Mr Pamell's scheme, providing it was made subordinate to the Government plan. May 2. Arrived Barque Carizal, from Lyttelton (Jan. 17); ship Falkland Hill, from Lyttelton (Jan, 13); barque Berwickshire from Napier Jan. 14) ; ship Soukar, from Napier (Jan, 17) ; barque Lorraine, from Timuru (Jan. 23) ; birqua Peru, from Gisborne (Jan. 24). The barque Orion, which left Auckland for London on February 4ih wiib a cargo of kauri limber, has put into Monte Video in a leaky condition. It is unoprtain whether she wiil have to discharge her cargo. lhe Duke of Edinburgh opened the Edinburgh Exhibition to-day. During her stay in the city the jewels of the Duchess of Edinburgh were stolen from the hotel. It is rumored that Mr Stanley will be appointed Governor of Congo, He received an ovation at St. James' Hall, where he was entertained at a banquet. H.R.H. the Prince of Wales presided. Sir Wilfred Lawson and Mr W. S. Caine are organising opposition to the proposals to give compensation to publicaos for loss of license.
Messrs Deasy and Cox, M.Ps., have eDtprtained the Australian cricketers at a banquet. May 8. During the debate on the Bill pro* viding for the disestablishment of the Church of Scotland, Mr Gladstone asserted that the Church was in a minority, and that the burden of providing for its utility rested with its supporters. In his opinion, the Churcb, in its existing form, was not the best embodiment of Protestantism. He would be glad to submit bis conduct to the Midlothian electors. The Marquis of Hartington opposed the Bill and Mr Chamberlain supported it. The Bill was lost by 38 votes. Madrid, May 1. j The Senate has approved of the Bil conferring universal suffrage. Paris, May 1. Government have forbidden deputations exceeding five members from approaching the Chamber of Deputies. St. Petersburg, May 3.
The Czar baa ordered aa enquiry to be made into the alleged atrocities committed on prisoners in Siberia, and the Grand Duke Alexis will make an inspection ot the Siberian prisons in company with an American journalist. New \ork, May 1.
