ANNUAL ELECTION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
PLEASANT VALLEY. The annual statutory meeting of the householders for the election of a new school committee was held in the school house on Monday evening last. Tery few householders came forward, and the proceedings went on smoothly and quietly. The chairman of the committee, Mr Kyran Brophy, occupied the chair. The following report of the retiring committee was read to the meeting and adopted Gentlemen,—According to custom the retiring committee beg to lay the following account of their actions during the past year before this, the annual statutory meeting of householders ;
The committee have held 13 regular or general meetings and 3 special meetings. During 1889 the board’s inspector visited the school twice, once on inspection visit and once to examine the school. The committee have much pleasure in staling that the result of the examination was very satisfactory, thus evidencing that the teachers had performed their duties in a faithful manner.
The usual attention has been given to the ground, fences, and master’s bouse, while ail the tress round the ground have been topped.
The committee arranged with the janitor to clean out the school, &o, t at the same rate as last year, viz., £lO IQj.
As you aro aware the board in 1888 put an addition to the school, and divided it by a fixed partition into two rooms. This was found to be veiy inconvenient in event of u concert, accordingly the committee determined to convert the partition into a movable one, and the sanction of the board having been obtained this was done at a coat ef £1 16s, which was defrayed by the committee out of the treat and prize fund. The balance in hand at the commencement of the last financial year was £3 5s 10 3. The receipts were £l7 7s fid from the board for incidentals, making a total of £2O 13r 4d. The expenditure has boon £2O 9s 4d, leaving a balance of 4a, with the second quarter’s incidentals amounting to £4 5s now duo. We commenced the year with a balance of £7 Os 5d (o the credit of the treat and prizs fund, and the receipts from concerts and other sources amount to £2O 16s 4d, the expenditure amounting to £2O is 9d, thus leaving a balance in hand of £7 15s. The books and vouchers were forwar ed to the board’s auditor, and returned duly audited and stamped. All accounts due up to date have been paid, with the exception of the last quarter’s salary to the -janitor. In conclusion the retiring committee would take this opportunity of urging upon the householders the necessity of sending their children regularly to the school, for if this is not done the school will lose the services of the mistress, a loss, the commit'ee feel sure, the parents do not wish to sustain. The number on the roll is now 79, and out of that number the average attendance for last quarter was only 60. The committee would like to see it up to 65, as by keeping it up to the lost number the salary of the mistress is considerub'y augmented, as is likewise the amount of the incidental allowance paid by the board. The committee would further point out that absence of pupils from school is discouraging to both teachers and pupils, and conduces to a low condition of passea -at' the inspector’s examination.—Signed for, and on behalf of, retiring committe,
-Kyran Bkoithy. Mr J, Menzies was elected chair* man of the public meeting. The following gentlemen were nominated and balloted for for the office of committeemen for the ensuing twelve months, via,Messrs W. Guildford, James Gregan, Archibald Kennedy, Wm. Bennett, K. Brophy, D. Gregan, and Edward Murphy. At a subsequent meeting of the new committee Mr Kyran Brophy was re-elected chairman, Mr James Gregan and the chairman were appointed to sign cheques. The meeting night was fixed for the last Saturday in. each month* ihe meeting then terminated.
WINCHESTER. '
