Walter Dunkley, minor canon. The final answers haying been given to the examination clauses of the consecration service, a hymn specially written for the occasion by the Very Rev. Dean Jacobs was sung, after which the final ceremony of laying on of hands took place, amidst moifc impressive silence. The Sacrament of Holy Communion was then administered, the communicants numbering 170, of whom 57 were clergy. On the new Bishop leaving the cathedral he was loudly cheered by the large concourse of ’people assembled outside. In the afternoon he held a reception at Bishop Court, when thy clergy of the diocese, members ef Synod, and prominent laymen were introduced to him, In the evening the installation service took place in the presence of another large congregation. The Chancellor having read the certificate of consecration, Bishop Julias made declaration of his intention to abide by the constitution and ; canons of the General: Synod of the Church of the Province of Mew Zoaland, and by the statutes, rules, and regulations of the Diocesan Synod and promised to faithfully serve as bishop of the churches of the diocese. After an an exhortation by Dean Jacobs he was presented with the pastoral staff of the diocese and installed in the Episcopalian throne. The Rev. W. Dunkley then conducted’ evening service, at which a special anthem was sung. The new bishop then delivered a most impressive sermon from the Ist epistle to Timothy-iy., 10.—For to this end we labor and strive, because we have eur hope set on the living God, who is the Saviour of ail men, specially to those who ba ieve.” In the course of his address he said that the hope of, a jliving God had through all ages made ohe Church strong, and husbanded her workers arid martyrs in such hope Chrysostom endeavored, Augmtine toiled, and j Boniface traved the dangers of the northern forests in the hope of a living Qod. Our own Selwyn worked, Pattison gave up his life, and Father Damien abode till death in the leper settlements and only prayed that God might sand another to fill his place. Never in the whole history of the Church had she a sterner work to do : than was in her hands to-day. No formula of a dead past would avail, nothing but an intense and mighty hope in the living God. In cor elusion be referred to the responsibilities of his office and earnestly entreated the help of clergy and laity. The service concluded with the Bnnediotion, pronounced by the Primate.
