THE LABOR TROUBLES.
London, March 13. Mr Shields, member of the Victorian Parliament, has had an interview with Cardinal Manning, who stated that the money subscribed for the Dock strike bad been properly expended. His Eminence also remarked that he had absolute confidence in Burns, and was delighted at the Christian civilised sympathy of Australia for the sufferings of the lower classes. The grain porters have struck for an advance of 6d a day. The Miners’ Conference have adopted the compromise agreed to by the Yorkshire colliers, accepting five per cent, increase if conceded at once. If the masters dc not give way a general strike will take place on Saturday. The Liverpool dock laborers refuse to arbi srate, March 15, Members of the Union are attacking non-unionists at Liverpool, and a body of 500 troops have been sent to preserve order. The strike of 200,000 colliers is cansing a great deal of excitement throughout the country, and the short production from Ihe Lancashire, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottingham, Leicestershire, Warwick, and North Wales mines is expected to result in the closing of the northern blast furnaces and many of the mills. Twenty thousand engineers at Newcastle and Stockton-on-Tees have gone ont on strike, demanding a cessation of work at midday on Saturday.
(Several of the Lancashire and Staffordshire colliery owners are willing to agree to the demands of the men. Twenty thousand of the Fifesbireminors are insisting on an increase of 10 per cent, of wages. Brussels, March 15. The Antwerp cigar - workers have struck for an increase of wages, and the factory proprietor declined to accede to the request. Great disorder has been occasioned, and it continues to increase. Berlin, March 15. Count Berlepcb, the Russian Minister of Commerce, has been elected President of the Berlin Labor Conference, and it is hoped that the result of the discussion will be to the advantage of the laboring class. Auckland, March 16. The carters’ strike is now finally settled. Winstone Bros, have also yielded to the demands of their men, and have taken four of them back into their employ at two guineas a week, besides raising the wages of those who had assisted them during the difficulty.
