Sydney, March 14. At Grafton the fl'od water extinguished the gas in the town, and tho whole city was inundated and left in darkness. A man named Schmidt fell off a raft and was drowned. At Lismore two men were drowned in the flood, • The weather has broken, and tho water in the flooded districts is reported to be receding, March 15. A dredge engaged in cleaning out the Clarence river broke away from its moorings during tho floods and„ was carried out to sea, Two steamers have been sent in pursuit, but so far their search has been unsuccessful. The dredge was valued at £ISOO. Brisbane, March 14. Most disastrous floods have occurred during the last four days, the highest ever recorded, yundreds of houses in the suburbs are entirely submerged, and boats are plying night and day rescuing the occupants. The gasworks are under water, and the city has been in total darkness for two nights. Four cases of drowning are reported. Tho damage is estimated at £IOO 000, The telegraph and railway lines are interrupted in all directions, and consequently no reports have been received from the country districts. When they do come they are expected to be serious. March 15. The water is subsiding. Most of those flooded out are suffering fearful privations, and are said to be on the ~ verge of starvation. Belief is being sent by the authorities. Great damages have been occasioned to the railway line. Yesterday three houses were washed down the river.
