TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board was held on Wednesday. Present— Messrs E. Acton (chairman), Teschemaker, Morris, Talbot, Wilson, and Captains Wooilcombo and Sutter. The Mackenzie County Council agreed to their clerk collecting the harbor rates within the coun'yMr Darling Wrote, under date of October 11th, that ho accepted (he offer of tho builders to deliver the tug at Timaru. The machinery was making excellent progress, but s'oel material could not ba got right away, and the hull was not yet commenced. However, the bulk of the work was in the machinery, arid no money was to be paid till tho keel was laid down.
De Beer and Co.,'Melbourne, asked for a number of particulars respecting the port, its facilities, charges, etc.—The secretary had forwarded the information. The Siauding Committee reported as follows “Your committee hare instructed the engineer to obtain a tender from Messrs Polliser and Jones for pih’ng the end of the North Wall, The offer will be submitted at the meeting. The committee recommend the board to charge the cost of dredging the harbor during the present year and also in future (o the general account. They recommend that the salary of Mr Andrew Mackay be increased at £36 per annum] from_ Ist of January next, and left, to the engineer to report to the board on bis proposals to lift more of the random protection blocks by contract. Your committee have arranged to allow Mr Darling to draw on the bo rd for the balance of the purchase money of the tug in preference to remitting (he money Home.” The chairman and engineer were authorised to arrange with the contractors for piling the end of the North Wall, and it was arranged that the opening into the harbor should be 350 feet.^ In his report, tho engineer suggested that tenders should be called for lifting the uppermost blocks of the wave-beater on the first kant, and that the random blocks at tho pier head should be made up with more blocks. A contract to repair the boiler of the crane Samson had Jjeen let, the amount being £l6 3s. The North Mole contract was proceeding satisfactorily. The Taniwba had dredged and discharged 1485 tons cf spod and 209 tons of rocks and boulders in 21 working days. It was decided to call for tenders for lifting the random blocks. The harbor master reported the arrival of 22 steam and 4 sailing vessels during November, total 9151 tons ; and tho sailing of M2 steam and 5 sailing vessels, total 10,037 tons. The weather was fine during the month. ■ . . Captain Sutter presented a petition bearing over 200 signatures, requesting the board to rescind the resolution passed ut their previous meeting limiting time and place for sea-bathing, and gave notice that at next meeting he would move that the resolution be rescinded. Captain Sutter drew attention to the a statement of the board’s late engineer, Mr Goodall, to the effect that he wanted the commission of per cent, on (lie plans when he accepted the position of engineer to tho board. As a matter of fact Mr Goodall received £2OO for his plans. This statement w>s horns out by the chairman. Messrs Talbot, Tesohemaker, and Morris thought they should take no notice of it, and after a short discussion the subject dropped, . The board’s bankers wrote that £1630 had been transferred from tho fixed deposit to the current account. The wharfage return for four weeks ended November 9<h was reported by the railway to bo £624. ' Accounts amounting £1973 3* lid were parsed for payment. The secretary stated that the harbor rate was coming in, mostly small amounts so far. The meo'ing then terraited.
