The fire on the Beltana at Lyttelton is believed to be extinguished, Arrangements have been made to discharge the cargo. A nine-roomed house belonging to Mr Hamilton, Stratharran, Southland, was burned on Wednesday; only a piano was saved. Insurance, £l5O ; estimated damage, £IOOO. A man named William Thompson was thrown from his trap at Killinchy on Wednesday night and dragged along the road, receiving injuries from which he died next morning. “ Professor ” Jackson, parachutist, attempted to ascend from a paddock near the Christchurch railway station on Wednesday evening. A strong nor’-west wind was blowing and carried the parachute against the telegraph wires close by. It became detached, and Jackson jumped off, escaping unhurt. The balloon was carried over the Port Hills and across Lyttelton Harbour, on the south side of which it ;Was secured.
