THE DOMINION PROPOSALS.
London, Nov. 22. Public opinion,is divided on the merit of the Dominion proposals of Sir Henry t Parkes, and the suggestions on the sub-i ject made by Mr Gillies^ In the course of an interview Sir Julius Vogel expressed an opinion, favorable to colonial federation on Im-. perial lines. The present he, thinks, is a forerunner of the separation! of the colonies from Great Britain, and; he thinks that it is essential that the; Imperial Government should at once, declare that they will forcibly prevent the colonies separating from the Mother; Country. Sir Julius accuses British; statesmen of callousness in the matter,, and expresses his firm conviction that, the colonies are strongly in favor of the unify of the Empire, Public opinion is favorable to bolding, another conference of colonial delegates, in London. Lord Salisbury is not in? favor of the proposal, because he is not, prepared with any questions for such a, conference. It is generally thought that. Sir Henry Parkes’Dominion scheme has, been suggested by him with a view to, furnish an excuse for having to swallow j protection, which ho fears will shortly carry the day in New South Wales. Brisbane, Nov. 22. Major-General Edwards, who recently visited New Zealand inspecting the forts, and forces, has arrived here. In re-, ferring to the Federation question he expressed a strong opinion that event-, □ally it must come. The adoption of a uniform tariff he considers a serious, matter to settle, and unless Federation? is secured it was not impossible that a, civil war would be the result. He favored the idea of intercolonial freetrader
