RAUKAPUKA LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The quarterly meeting of this committee was held yesterday. Present —Messrs J. M.- Barker (chairman), W. M. Moore, A. Macdonald, and W. E. Barker. I EENEWAL3. \ Application for renewals were received from Mr T. Clayton, for the Star of the South Hotel; from Mr W. Wheelband, for the Eangitata Bridge Hotel; and from Mrs J. Tindall for a I tiansfer of the Hilton Hotel to Patrick Daly. Mr White appeared for Mr Daiy. The two former applications were granted. Inspector Thompson objected to the latter, on the ground that Mr Daly was not a fit and proper person to hold a license. Mr Thompson was about to read a number of letters from private parsons containing complaints against Mr Daly when holding licenses elsewhere, also reports from the police on the same subject, when Mr White objected to these being read. He contended that the writers should be present to substantiate them and to submit to crossexamination. Inspector Thompson then stated what the gist of the letters and reports was.

Mr White suggested that the application should he adjourned, so as to allow of the writers of the letters and reports appearing to give evidence. He contended that the committee could not refuse a license on the unsupported evidence of the documents, otherwise the applicant could apply to to the Supreme Court for a mandamus compelling the committee to consider the application. Mr White also offered to have Mr Daly sworn, so that his version might be heard. The bench went into committee for a quarter of an hour to consider the question of adjourning or of hearing Mr Daly in evidence. Mr and Mrs Daly were both sworn, and were closely questioned with re-

gard to the allegations made against the former. The bench then went into committee again on the question of adjourning to allow of witnesses to be called, and it was finally decided to adjourn till that day fortnight at 11 a.m.
