FAREWELL SOCIAL.
'A. farewell social was given in the Rangitata South schoolroom last Monday evening to Mr McLeod add family on the occasion of their leaving the district. There was a crowded attendance, and great enthusiasm was manifested in making everything pleasant for the guests of the evening, as well as in showing them the esteem and respect in which they were held. Refreshments in abundant quantity and excellent in quality were provided by Mesdames Taylor and Bisset, and music by Mr H. Colville, while Mr A. Bisset acted as Master of Ceremonies, Songs were rendered by Miss McLeod (Dolly’s Revenge), Mr Meredith (I Can’t Make up my Mind), Miss ; Meredith (Tit for Tat), Mr Naughton (Edinburgh Toon), Mr Early (Did You Ever Catch a Weasel Asleep), Miss McLeod (Killarney), Miss Meredith (Gates of the West), Mr Early (The Parson and the Clerk), and a recitation was given by Mr Rennie. During the evening Mr J. M. Naughten presented Mr McLeod with the following address : “Rangitata, Aug. 19, 1889. “ Me William McLaod. “ DiAR Sir, —Wo, the undersigned, on your! proposing to leave our immediate locality to reside elsewhere, desire to express the warm regards we cherish for you, and to wish you every success in your new abode. You have lived long in our midst; we have bad ample opportunities of intercourse with you—you have always bad arduous and responsible duties to discharge—and wo gladly bear testimony to the ability, integrity, and diligence you have at all times displayed. You* and the members of your family have always interested yourselves in social, school, and church matters, and the aid you have rendered has been most eordial and valuable. On yeur removing to other scenes of labor and enterprise, we wish you all prosperity. .Ife, - trust you will secure elsewhere the trust and confidence 1 of a large circle of friends, and wo hope they will not bo'loss' sincere and appreciative in their esteem than those you leave behind. ; ' ; “ Dfhoak Taylor “ John Robertson . “ Christopher Bisset ' “ John M. Mason.” Mr McLeod replied in feeling terms, expressive of the great pleasure it gave him to receive such expressions of good will from them. During the time he had spent in the Rangitata District ho felt that he had been very kindly treated bj his neighbors, and he could assure them he would never forget their kindness. He thanked them on behalf of his family. They were leaving the district, but he hoped they would have many opportunities of meeting again. Dancing was kept up until about 4 a.m., and a most enjoyable evening was spent.
