TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The regular monthly meeting of the above board wa3 held on Tuesday. Present —Messrs A. Grant (chairman), 0. Biaee', J, Fraser, and W, Saeil. MOTTOES. The minntes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £SB 7s lOd we're' passed for payment. COSRBSPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as under : _ From Mr E. Waddell, complaining of a of the drain on Lower Swamp \ oarl being choked up, and asking what 'steps the board intended to take in the matter. He was willing to pay half cost. , —The matter was left to the overseer to arrange. From Mr S. McCully, applying for timber or pipes (o give access to a piddock on Springfield estate leased by bim. —There being already one crossing the application was not entertained. From Mr Amos Hope, suggesting that small birds could fee netted, end offaring to make the experiment if the board would' give a reasonable price per doz*»n fcr the birds.—The question was deferred. From Mr W. Smith, applying to haye the name of Mr T. Parke substituted for his on the roll, in respect of property at Milford now standing in his name.— Granted on the usual conditions. From Mr W. McLeod, applying to have bis name removed from the roll iu respect of R.S. 1940, at ftangitata, and that of Mr Ruddenklau substituted.—The latter havingconsented the alteration to be made. From Mr J. F. Jfage, urging that tt« fords at the Rangitata be put in order now the river is low.—The ovarseer said that a l number of boulders r«quired to be picked Mr Snell spoke on the subject, pointing oat where a new cutting to one of the fords would have to be made. Part of the former track waß now on private roperty. —The •verseer to attend to the matter. The boulders were already

being picksd out. From the clerk to lbs County Council, stating that the ranger of water-races wbb instructed to attend to overflow complained of at Rangitata. H« also suggested that in future the overseer could report at once to the ranger in cases of similar description. From Messrs Smith and Stiggins, asking for a drain or culvert, near Walker's road, to take water from the section in tLier occupation.—The overseer to report. A circular was received from Mr J. Cambridge, manager of the Drug Company, Ashburton, offering to supply poisoned grain at 14s per bushel. From Mr J, H. Bsker, Crown Commissioner, covering tracing of lot 46, reserve 137 J, and asking that the position of the plantation made by the board might be marked upon same and returned, so that the plantation might be secured to the board. The clerk to attend to the mutter. . From the Auditer-General, returning certified copy of balance-sheet of the bo»rd. From the treasury department, intimating the payment to the board's credit of £l3 3s 2d for rates on Crown land. From the clerk to Exhibition Com-

mittee, asking for return of subscription Jis>\, forwarded to the board.— Eo subscriptions had been received. The list to be returned. Mr B. Anderson applied to hsve bis namo removed from the roll in respect of property lately occupied by him on Waitohi, and th'it of Messrs KenDaway Bros, substituted.—The clerk said that the property tax commissioner had already made the alteration. RATI. Mr Fraser proposed and Mr Snell seconded—" That the resolution levying a rate ot one halfpenny in the £ for the year ending March 31st, 1890, be now confirmed. The same to be payable to the clerk at the Road Board office in one •mm on and after the sixteenth day of July current.—Carried. TENDERS. Tenders were received for the following works :-^ Contract No. 7 —Cleaning drain, Clyne's roa( j—R, Williams, la 2d per chain (accepted) ; B. Roberts, Is lid per chain. OTEESEES'S EEPOBT.

11 Sir 1 have the honor to report for the past month as follows:—Tenders have been invited fer cleaning drain, Clyne's

road. Contracts .Nos. 2,5, and 6 are completed and passed for payment. Contracts Nos. 1 and 3 will be completed in a fen days. The pipe culvert on road to Gully Bush has beea removed, and the ford and embankment on Waitohi Terrace road are almost completed. Owing to the timber not coming to hand until tho end of list week, very little progress has been made with other works authorised.— I have, etc., :■ "F. Archer, * "Overseer.*' PETITION. The Eev. J. Dickßon presented a petition from Bome 30 ratepayers on the Waitohi in respect of the footbridge near the man6e bridge. The petitioners set forth the daogerons condition of the bridge, and forcibly urged that in view of the very unsatisfactory state of affiirs, tho bridge might be lengthened.—Mr Dickson gave instances of several accidents that had happened within his knowledge, and gave, a graphic description of the difficulties of reaching the precarious footp'»nk by which the existing portion of the bridge is reached.

The subject was discussed at some •ngtb; Mr Fras9r was of opinion that to lengthen the bridge would be a useless expenditure at present. There was no knowing wber.e the river might go to. Mr Bisset thought they would find themselves pat to a cost of about £2OO before they knew what they were about.

Mr Fraser thought a diversion of the liver might he made. The overseer suggested that the members should visit the spot, and this course was agreed to.

IKTEBTIEW. Mr P. Wareiug applied for some planks to repair a bridga crossing a draiD leading to a paddock in his occupation in Boilingdown road. The bridge had been erected 1 by the board, bat was now out of repair.— Discussion ensued as to whether it wua Jsj#l\ to continue to repair these wooden crossings or whether pipes would ba better.—Mr JBisset understood that Mr Wareing had already one mode of access to his paddock. He *ould suggest that if

one bridge was sound the application be not entertained. If repairs to the one were really required, pipes to bo nubstitwted This course was agreed 10.

Mr W. Cook waited upon the board and draw attention to tho condition of th< road in froDt of his section.—The side o the road was scoured out, «nd in we weather waa almost impassable and decidedly daogerotJß.—The overseer toreporl at next meeting. SMALL BIRDS 1 QUESTION.

The petitions sent out for signature of parsons anxious to have the matter of the small birds nuisance dealt with by special rate were relumed with about 30 signatures.

Mr Frnser Btated that he believed most people were in favor of the movement, but would not take the trouble to sign a petition. He understood poisoned wheat could be procured in 101 b bags, and would suggest that some be procured. They could be sold at Is a bag. MnSnell thought the ido.i a good one, and felt that the master should be dealt with.

Mr Fraser proposed that the overseer ba authorised lo procure 8 bushels of poisoned wiioat in 101 b bags, end to procure a further supply at a cost not exceeding £VO, if it was found that such be reqairad. Agreed to.

MISCELLANEOUS. It was Bgreed lo have the drain from Springfield Koid to McNair'a clean-ad. Mr Grant to pay half cost of same. Mr Bisset, representing Messrs Rolleflton. Taylor, and Lawler, applied for two cattle crossings to reserve 1400, as promised by the board when the applicants should have fenced the land.—The overseer was instructed to attend to the matter. OUTSTANDIHOt RATES. The clerk reported that the outstanding collectable rates amounted to £ls 16s 2d. TRACTION ENGINES ON ROADS. Ihe chairman said that his attention had been drawn to the manner in which the roads were being cut up by traction and haulage engines. The power of the board was discussed, and It was decided to ascertain their legal position in the matter. The meeting then terminated.
