SOUTH ORARI SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The menthly meeting of the South Orari School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Monday evening. Present—Messrs J. C. Binskin (chairman), G. O’Neil, J. Collie, J.McLssd, W. Langdon, and J. J. Ellis. Mr J. McLeod handed in a further sum of 6s 6d, collected for purchasing fuel for the school. The,minutes of the last ordinary and of a special meeting (held May 30th) were read aid confirmed.

The teacher’s report was then read and considered. It showed the average attendance to be 59.3, which was considered highly satisfactory. The toucher requested to be supplied with a new blackboard, and several other school requisites, and also suggested that the Board be made acquainted with the state of the ceiling in the old room, it being very unsafe, as the plaster is continually falling down. _ After a long discussion re. supplying pens, pencils, etc., to the. children, it was.resolved—“That the parents be requested to contribute the sum of sixpence per quarter per head for all children in aid above Standard 1., and threepence per head below Standard 1,, and in return the committee will supply tbe children with pens, leadpencils, and slate-pencils.” The teacher also asked the committee to fix the mid-winter holidays, and it was decided to close the school from the 12th July to the 39th. He also reported that Miss Ida Gardener, the recently appointed assistant mistress, commenced her duties on June 10th, and reqaeite'cT''' permission to use the harmonium, as it would greatly assist her in teaching singing. —Permission granted. He also called tbe committee’s attention to several windows being broken, and to the chimney in the old room smoking very badly, and to several other small repairs, which needed attending to. As the committee have no funds in hand it .was decided to get up a concert and dance to raise funds, to be held about the 11th of July, and the chair - man was requested to try and get the Temuka Minstrel and Dramatic Club to assist at the concert. Several promises of support were received from Geraldine. It was decided to provide refreshments free to the singers, and also at the dance, and if possible to engage Mr Pigoni as musician for the dance. It was decided to get 100 tickets printed: 60 for concert only, and 50 for concert and dance; the charges to be Is 6d and 8s respectively, ladies free to dance \ also to advertise in the Gxfaedian.

ic was unanimously resolved to give Mias M. Leary, the late pupil teacher, a testimonial, expressing the com-

mittee’s satisfaction with the way she has brought the children on during the time she has been pupil teacher. The visitor reported having visited the school, and found several small repairs urgently requiring attending to. Mr G. O’Neil was appointed visitor for the month. Ik was decided to hold a special meeting to make final arrangements for the concert and dance, and the committee adjourned.
