TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
Monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held on Tuesday erening. Present—Messrs J. T, M. Hayhurit (chairman), E. ■ Brown,' W. G. Rutland, K. J. Gray, anc*. W. Storey. .. COBEBSPOHDKTOI. 7 Correspondence was dealt with as ’follows:— Prom the Waiuate School Committee asking the Temuka Committee to co-oporate with them in requesting hoard to appoint an instructor in millitary drill and exercises for the schools, and stating that SergeantMajor Jones had stated his willingness to give the instruction if sufficient remuneration were offered.—ln the course of discussion which ensued the chairman said the proposal was a goed one, but he was afraid the hoard had not got the funds; they had not enough to provide for the incidentals of the various school It was the duty of one of the teachers to impart the instruction now. Mr Gray said if the children w era instructed in military exercises it was the state that was benefited, and the state should pay. He would move—“ That the secretary be instructed to acknowledge the receipt of the letter, and state that the committee cannot see its way to comply, with the request contained ■ in it, as the Board of Education cannot afford to give enough funds to provide for current expenditure of schools under its control, but would willingly join it in requesting Government - to grant the money needed for the purpose.”—Seconded by Mr Rutland and carried. . Prom the Board of Education forwarding two applications for the
position of fourth teacher for the school ; also enclosing inspector’s recommendation. —The secretary explained that one of the applicants had afterwards withdrawn his application, having received another appointment. The other applicant had then been recommended to the board for the appointment;. HEAD MASTEe’s BEPOXf. The head master’s report was read as follows: “I have the honor to submit the following report fer the five weeks ending Slat May: Boys. Girls. Total. Average roll ... 198.4 171.2 869.6 Average attendance 139.8 129.5 269.8 Highest attendance 159 146 305 “ It will be observed that the average has dropped a little. This is owing to the attendance on the 9th and 10th May, when our average was only 149. Substracting the attendance on those four, half days, the average rises to 980.7

When I made the last request for requisitei I was not quite out of either . slate or drawing pencil*, having four ,boxes of the former and four dozen odd of the latter; but I strive always' to anticipate tbe wants of the. school that there may be no inconvenience, “It has become necessary also to replace some hat-pins in Ottr porches, and Miss Phillips desires an increased supply in the inf ant one. “ I enclose•=' cheque 1 lor £2 16s, amount of stationery fees. “I have, etc., “ W. Betaes.” It was resolved that the paper and pens asked for be obtained. INTACT DEPABTMBNT. Miss Phillips, Infant Mistress, wrote asking tbe committee to supply seme books and cord for hanging up cards, the walls being seriously bare, and for some bat pegs in the porch, also that a box of letters and a T square should be obtained. —It was decided to apply to the board for the square and box of letters, and that the nooks and. cords for the cards should be obtained. The chairman consented to see to the hooks required in the porch. VISITOR. Mr Storey, the visitor for the past month reported that some catches were wanted for the doors and that more hat pegs were much needed.—lt was decided to obtain the catches. Mr Gray was appointed visitor for the month. HOLIDAYS. It was resolved that the midwinter holidays should commence on the 12th July and last a fortnight. accounts. Accounts to the amount of £2 10s were passed for payment and the meeting terminated.
