ACCIDENT TO THE IONIC.
Christchurch, May 13. The lonic, which left Lyttelton on May 2nd, put back this evening with a broken crank shaft. Captain Ridley states that on May 4th, in longitude 168 W., latitude 52.12 S., 926 miles from Godley Head, the alter shaft gave way. The vessel was headed towards Lyttelton, and she returned under sail. On May 7th the wind changed from S.W. to S S.W. All sail was crowded on, and next day the screw shaft was connected, and one engine got to work. Lyttelton Heads were sighted this afternoon. The vessel is now lying in the stream and will be towed inside the breakwater to-morrow. The passengers presented Captain Ridley with an address complimenting him on the splendid way in which he handled his vessel. The mails will probably be sent by tbe San Francisco mail leaving Lyttelton on Friday. The passengers and cargo will probably be transferred to the Coptic, now at, Lyttelton. The transfer could be effected in about three days.
