Napier, May 13. , Hairo Te Pere, executed for the murder of the Pook family, met his fate without emotion. At his trial at Gisborne Pere confessed to the murder, but last Friday night he made a statement to Captain Preece, R.M., that ho and his brother entered Pook’s store for robbery, but, being detected, his brother struck Pook, and, in fact, committed all the murders, while he, Haire, looked on in bewildered astonishment. He stated to others that it was arranged among his family that he, being guiltless, should be arrested, and would be got off, his brother paying for the lawyer with the proceeds of the robbery. There was no communication with the steamsas owing to tbe storm, and the hangman was carried on. A prisoner serving a short sentence was the executioner, for which service the rest of the sentence was remitted. The Charitable Aid Board bas applied to the Sherriff as to when the hangman is to be released, as the board is supporting his wife and child, for the desertion of whom the hangman was sent' to gaol for four months, it is understood he is to be discharged to-morrow, and his passage paid elsewhere. On his release his wife will prosecute him again, Two months’ of the hangman’s sentence have been served.
