ACCIDENTS FATALITIES, OFFENCES, ETC.

New York, May 12. A terrific cyclone has passed over the Eastern States of America. Barnum’s show was partly wrecked. In Maryland twenty-five persons were blown off a bridge. Numerous deaths are reported. A tramcar loaded with passengers collided with a railway train on the level crossing in Michigan, and six women were killed. Brisbane, May 13. Blacks are becoming troublesome again. Mr Watson, a squatter at Cooktown, and Evans, a stockman, were attacked by them. The former was stabbed to death, while Evans was so seriously injured that he lies in a critical coudition. Auckland, May 14. At about 7 o’clock to-night the steamer Australia, bound from Auckland for the East Coast and Wellington, collided in Rangitoto Channel with the tug Awhena and the barque Essex, which were lashed together coming into port. The cause of the accident is not known. The Australia received a slight dent on her after port quarter, and her deck planks were slightly started and one of her boats damaged. The bowsprit of the Essex was carried away. The Awhena received the most serious damage, and it is thought that her stem is twisted out of place and some planks started. The Australia, which had a number of passengers on board, returned to port, whilst the Essex sailed to an anchorage in the harbour. The Awhena has been beached at Rangitoto. Wanganui, May 14. An accident happened to-day to Mr W. Russell, a settler, of Goat Valley. He was thrown out of a cart and so seriously injured that his recovery is doubtful. Waipawa, May IS. An accident occurred near Waipawa on the railway line on Saturday, when the engine and tender of a tram were derailed through two horses getting on the line. The engine went over a small embankment, and the driver and stoker were both much shaken and bruised. The wonder is that both were not killed.
