SUPREME COURT.
CRIMINAL SESSIONS. Timaru—Wednesday Mai 1,1889. (Before His Hooor Mr Justice Dennistout).) BUEGLAET. William Agustus Percy Smith pleaded not guilty to a charge of burglariously entering the house of Twentyman Wilson (the Melville Hotel) on the night of the 27th February, and stealing therefrom money to the amount of £2 2s in small coins, a ham, and various other articles. Mr Hay for accused. After considerable evidence bad been taken, the jury returned a verdict of guilty, and prisoner was sentenced to three years' imprisonment. Four previous convictions were attested to. ALLEGED LABCENT. The case of W. Francis, against whom a true bill had been found on a charge of larceny of a pocket book containing a £2O note, picked up by him in the street, was called by the Eegistrar, when the Crown Prosecutor applied for an adjournment as a most important witness had gone away, and could not be found. His Honor granted an adjournment until next session, allowing bail, prisoner in LSO and two sureties of L 25 each. CIVIL SESSION. On the application of Mr Knubley, Mr Edward Cutten was appointed one of the trustees of the Mendelson estate, Mr Hay, who appeared for the other trustees, consenting on their behalf. The court then adjourned till 10,30 next morning. Timaktt—Thursday, Mat 2. (Before His Honour Mr Justice Denniston, and a special jury.) Isaac Sargeant v. Q-eorge Jameson (both of Ashburton), claim LI2OO for value, and L2OO damages, for wrongful conversion of a parcel of 1208 sacka of wheat. Mr Wilding and Mr Hay for plaintiff; Mr G-. Harper and Mr Purnell, for defendant. The jury found a verdict for defendant.
At New Plymouth on Wednesday E. A. Nelson and McLaughlin were acquitted of perjury. Mr Justice Gillies ordered that the signature of the deed of lease Petrie to McLaughlin be photographed in the interest of scientific investigation in the subject ! of forgery. The charge of perjury arose out of two witnesses swearing that the signatures were forgeries, and two swearing that they were genuine. At Wanganui on Wednesday, John Fitzgerald got 12 months for robbery with violence. At Blenheim on Wednesday, Rawson, a maltster, got a verdict of Ll5O damages, with costs on lowest scale, against Tildes, a bank manager, for using the words in a public street, " I'll make a bankrupt of you." A new trial will be applied for.
