TIMARU MARKETS. TIMAKU. The Canterbury Farmers’ Co-opera-tive Association, Limited, report under date 15th inst., as follows: Wheat—The past week has seen a considerable amount of activity in the market for this cereal. The publication of the harvest statistics of the several Australian colonies showing a heavy deficiency as compared with previous years has changed for the time being the entire aspect of the market, wheat that a fornight ago was slow of sale at 3s being now readily saleable at 6d to 9d above that figure. During the early part of the current week sales have been made at 3s 6d for ordinary lines of milling quality, but more recent advices from Australia confirming the shortage there, have further strengthened themarket, and latest transactions have been on the basis of 3s 9d on rail at Timaru for mixed lines, while prime lots of tuscan would command more money. It now seems pretty certain that New frouth Wales will have to import very extensively from New Zealand in order to meet the heavy deficiency in that colony, and a further advance in values here is not improbable. Owners, however, would do well to bear in mind the possibility of California being in a position to compete with New Zealand for the New South Wales trade. Assuming that she has the wheat for export, which is at the present moment an open question, it is safe to say that cargoes from San Francisco can be laid down in Sydney at under 5s a bushel, and this, therefore, may be the average price to be looked for in that centre, while ordinary market fluctuations will no doubt take place. Farmers will no doubt watch with interest the course of the market during the next few weeks, acting with prudence in the meantime in disposing of their produce. Oats—A good demand exists for all kinds. All lots offering have found ready sale at 2s to Id for good Danish, 2s Id to 2s 3d for good short feed, and 2s 3d to 2s 5d for milling sorts. Owners are not, however, anxious to quit at these rates, preferring to take thechanceof the anticipated Australian demand leading to higher prices, and a large portion of the new crop will probably be stored on owners’ account. Barley—No transactions have as yet taken place, there being very little of the new crop yet in the market. Yalues are expected to range from 3s fid to 4s for malting quality.

A Timaru paper understands that parcels of tuscan have been sold at 3s 9d to 3s lOd, and that a 700 bushel line for seed changed hands at 4s. GRAIN SALE. Messrs Matson and Co. held the first of the local grain sales of the season on Saturday at Christchurch, when there was a large attendance of farmers and buyers and a fair catalogue, considering the early season, which met with keen and brisk competition. A small line of milling wheat reached 3s 8d to 3s in store; lower grades, chick wheat, &0., brought 2s fid to 2s lid ; parcels of broken wheat brought from 3s 2d to 3s sd. Oats brought from 2s 3d to 2s s£d in small lines. Eye-grass, rough and inferior, brought 2s fid. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, March 15. Elour, roller makes, £l4; New Zealand flour, £ll 10s.
