HILTON PUBLIC SCHOOL.
The annual school treat in connection with the Hilton School was held on the school grounds on Friday last. The weather was most favorable, and the members of the school committee, the teachers of the school, and all the parents concerned, worked hard, and by their united efforts made the affair a great success. Mesdames Barclay, Aitken, and Dunlop, of Geraldine, very kindly came over and examined the sewing of the school, and their report is appended. Provisions on the most iberal scale were provided, the catering of Mr Williams giving every satisfaction. A long programme of sports was gone through, and the competition was very keen. Special prizes for sewing were contributed by Mesdames Hay, Kelland, Aitken, Dunlop, and Barclay, as well as one by the Eev. Mr Archibald. The sewing prizes were distributed by Mr B. Skinner, Chairman of the School Committee. The following is the prize list Standard V.—C. Goughian (Mrs Hay’s prize), 1; M. Skinner (Mrs Dunlop’s prize), 2; M. Earl (Mrs Holland's prize), 3. Eeporfc on Sewing.—Having been asked to examine the sewing of Hilton Public School, with a view to awarding prices in the several standards, we had pleasure in doing so on Eriday, 15th March. We found our task by no means easy, on account of the uniform excellence of the work presented for our inspection. It was only by the most minute and detailed examination of sewing, stitching, hemming, buttonholing, etc., that we were able to decide degrees of excellence. This we have done to the best of our ability, but we would have found it easier had there been more prizes to allocate, as the difference between those who had to be cut out altogether and those who got prizes was often very slight. Let this be for the encouragement of the unsuccessful. If any distinction could be made, when all was so good, we should be inclined to mention specially the lower standards, as presenting marvellous work, considering the years of the pupils,—Mesdames Barclay, Dunlop, and Aitken. sports PRIZES.
