TEMUKA TOWN BOARD.

The regular monthly meeting of the above board was held yesterday evening. Present—Messrs Gray (chairman), Blyth, and Clinch. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. chairman’s statement. The chairman slated that he had aeon Mr Lee, the chairman of the Arowbenua Town Board, in reference to the proposed alteration of the railway gate arrangements. They were mutually of opinion that little could be done. OOKRBSPONpENCE. Correspondence was received Prom Mr Montgomery, in reference to the neglect of the nightaoil contractor. If more suitable arrangements could be made he was quite willing to pay a small rate. From the Minister of Public Works, intimating that in future all communications hitherto dealt with under the Public Works Act must be sent to the Minister of Lands, the Public Works Department having beon abolished. From the secretary of the Canterbury brunch of the Dunedin Exhibition urging co-operation in getting representation,

and enclosing subscription list. The letter was read, and the list laid upoa the table. From the Audit Department, intimating that the demand for audit fees had been made in accordance with an Order-in-Oouocil of 23rd October, 1888, instead of that of 19th April, 1887, by which the rate was considerably higher. The amount demanded was passed for payment. From the Manager Bank of Now South Wales, intimating that at present they had no intention of having foopnth in front of their property asphalted. From Mr West Chamberlain, asking that the name of Mr Robert Fenton might ,btT substituted for his in. respect of known as Temuka Hotel.—The alteration had already been made, OVERSEER'S REPORT. The overseer reported that there had been satisfactory progress made with the asphalt contract, and all work done to the present date had been measured up, the total amount completed, with the exception of top dressing, being 1268 yards. Wells Nos. 2 and 3 had been bricked and fitted with cast iron man-boles, as per the board’s instructions. The Vine street drain from the railway crossing near Angland’s to the rear of the Volunteer Hall, as well as its branches, had been cleared out, and he recommended that the drain from A.ckroyd’s to its junction with * the Vine street drain at present uncovered should be piped. Two men had been employed duiiog the month, one for 5| days at wells, the other 25£ days at general work, including wells. In reference to Railway Terrace be reported that the earth carted from footpaths in Main Street was not sufficient to complete the filling up of the west side of the street, and if more was not put down it would dam the water back when wet weather set in, Numerous complaints had been made as to lifemanner in which the nightsoil contractor carried out his duties. The overseer was directed to inform the nightsoil contractor of the complaints made. Mr Blyth moved, Mr Clinch seconded, and it was carried— “ That the clerk prepare an estimate of the earth work required on Railway Terrace, and call for tenders, tbn same to be dealt with at a special meeting on the 20th inst.” THE ASPHALT CONTRACT. The Clerk of Works reported on the amount of work done by the contractors for this work, and recommended that £IOO should be paid on account of work done. After some discussion it was decided that a progress payment of £IOO should be made, and consideration of other matters-was left over. The Clerk was insirnclsd to push on the asphalt contract, and dispense with the Clerk of the Works as soon as possible on account of the expense. THE STREETS. Mr Clinch considered the sooner the keeping of the streets clean and in repair was let by contract the better. Mr Blyth agreed, and said that he noticed the Waimate Board had recently let the keeping of their streets by contract. He thought the matter should be dealt with at next meeting. ACCOUNTS. In reply to Mr B'yth the chairman said the board was in credit to the amount' oft'’ £162 15s 2d. Accounts to the amount of £l3B (h lid were passed for payment. DOG TAX. The clerk reported that the,dogs were being registered very slowly. , RENTS. The clerk reported that ho had given all the board’s tenants notice it the rents overdue, and one had paid,—Members expressed the opinion that overdue rents must be settled at once. RATES. The clerk was instructed to lay a list of unpaid rates before the board at their special meeting on the 20tb. The meeting then terminated.
