TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board was held yesterday. Present Messrs E. Acton (chairman), I. Morris, J. Wilson, D. M. Boss, and Talbot. The Board dealt with correspondence received in connection with the Shaw Savill Co.' v. Timaru Harbor Board case, in committee. , The Engineer wrote that owing to illness he could not attend at the Board’s meeting. Thera was, however, nothing to report since date of last meeting. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Canterbury Committee to promote the interests of the New Zealand Jubilee Exhibition, asking the Board to exert its influence to secure a representation of the Canterbury industries at the Exhibition, and forwarding subscription lists,—lt was decided that the lists should be on the table. The Secretary slated that the wharfage? income for 1 ist month amonnted (o over £IOOO. It was resolved that the Engineer be authorised to take steps to lay down tWo screw moorings in addition to the other already placed ; the chairman and Mr D. M. Ross to be authorised to deal with tenders for the work. The cost of the mooring already laid down was stated to be £7O. It was decided to hold the meetings of the Board on the same date in each month as heretofore. Mr D. M. Roes said the tug Titan was unfit for the work required at the port. Large ships were constantly visiting the port, and a more powerful tug was required. He disapproved of altering the Titan to suit; requirements; that vessel might suit the requirements of a smaller port —be did not laow. He thought a screw tug similar to the Plucky used at Otago Heads was the stamp of steamer required. He said if there had been a fall meeting he should have moved that a more powerful tug be obtained. Mr Wilson coincided with Mr Ross’ views to a certain expert, but thought if the tug could be altered to suit their requirements for a couple of years it would be worth while trying the experiment. Mr Talbot and the chairman advocated postponement of the matter till next meeting and this was agreed to. Messrs McEwea shd Co. wrote that the order from the board had been forwarded, and would arrive by the Elderslie. The clerk to the Waimate County Council wrote stating that no nominations fora member of the harbor board for Makikihi district bad been received, Mr

Teschemaker bad been duly elected for Pareoro. The Oamaru Harbor Board wrote asking the Board’s co-operation to induce Government to bring in a measure providing fcr the consolidating of loans of corporate bodies.-In reply to Mr Talbot, Mr Ross said he understood that by such a system as that proposed Government would take up the loans of public bodies, and they would borrow money at 3 per cent, on the whole total, whereas corporate bodies have to pay 6 and 7 per cent.—Consideration postponed. The harbor master reported the arrival . of 17 steamers and 5 sailing vessels,, of an segregate registered tonnage of 9449 tons, and the departure of 17 steamers and 6 sailing vessels, of a total tonnage of 9015, for the month ending 31st January, 1889. The weather during the month had been fine. The report and balance-sheet for the year ended 31st December, 1888, were adopted. Accounts amounting to £3265 were passed for payment. It was stated that the Oamaru Harbor Board were in treaty for the purchase of one of the snrfboats for £IOO. The Bo»rd then adjourned.
