TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
I The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held last ' uesday. Present—Messrs J. Talbot (Chair man), Quinn, Hayhurst, Bisaet, and Fraeer. . INTEKVIEWS. Mr Hawke interviewed the Board in reference to a cutting running past Mr Stewart's place at Bangitata. There was about an acre of land there, and he had put in it about £l3 worth of willows at a cost of £3, making in all £l6. "When he went there he found not a willow left. He would like to know would he get anything for the damage done.—rhe Chairman promised to look into it, and Mr Hawke retired. Mr Rutland presented a petition from residents in Andrewville, complaining of the state of the road in that locality. Mr Butland suggested that something in tbe shape of a footpath on the Main road might be made. —Tbe Chairman Baid the road in Andrewville had not been dedicated to the Board, and until it had been the Board could not do anything in it. They had offered to keep the road if Mr Grant would transfer it to them, but he had not done so.—Mr Butland, after having been promised consideration for his petition, retired. Mr Brown waited on the Board to ask that the ditch from bin gate to the new culvert on the Swamp road be cleaned. —After Mr Brown had retired, the Board decided that the Overseer see the landowners interested, and if they consent to pay their share of the work to have it done. In re Mr Hawke's application, the Overseer was ordered to report on the matter. In re Mr Rutland's application, the Overseer was ordered to report. Messrs P. Wareing and Christmas asked for a culvert to be made from the corner of Mr Wareing's lower fence to Mr Christmas'a fence, so as to take away the water. Mr Wareing said that as they had raised the rates now they ought to do something substantial. The pipes put down where his brother used to live were too small. He wished the Board to take them up and put them as double pipes farther up the road. They were useless where they were.—ln re the application of Messrs Wareing and : Christmas, it was decided to comply with it. In re the application of . Mr Wareing to take up the pipes, the i Chairman said they could take them up, but it was, not clear that it was necessary to put them down in the place indicated by Mr Wareing.—lt was decided that the Overseer take the pipes up, and see whether they were required where Mr Wareing requisitioned they should be put, and if so put them there. Mr Clark waited on the Board in reference to a culvert on Bolleston's road. —The Chairman explained the plan which had been adopted for making a barrel concrete culvert there, and Mr Clark said he would be perfectly satisfied.—Mr Clark also complained of the state of the road to his private residence. The road was in a terrible state.—Mr Clark was promised that it would be looked to.— Mr Clark also asked whether the Board was likely to continue cleaning the Canal drain. If so he would be would be glad to pay his share of cleaning it.—After Mr Clark had retired, Mr Bisaet said that only about
20 (h'tins required cleaning, and it was agreed that it should be done on the usual terns of owners of properties paying their share. CORBISPONDBNCE. Correspondence was read From Mrs I. McNair.and Messrs A. Grant, E. Wilson, and L. Scott, asking their names to be taken off the rate roll, as they had disposed of the properties for which they were rated. —Ordered to be attended to. From Mr John Lawson, accepting the offer of the Board to re-lease the pound. From residents in the Eangitata School district, asking for some improvements to be made to a road near the school there. —The Overseer said a good deal of the water complained of would go away if the people had not blocked up the channels with fences. —The Overseer was ordered to see to the matter. .From Mr LeCren, enclosing his share of making a drain. Prom Messrs Harper and Co., Christchurch, stating that their tenants were liable to pay rates on certain properties mentioned. From the Treasury, Wellington, stating the Board would receive subsidies as soon as they had signed the necessary form of declaration. OVERSEER'S REPORT. The Overseer's report was read as follows: " To the Chairman and members. " Gentlemen, —I have the honor to report for the past month as follows: " Contract No. 29, cleaning drain on Penny's Eoad, is completed, and passed for payment. Some shingte repairs have been done during the month, but, owing to the wet weather, the contractor has not made much progress with the wors. " The river crossings were cut about, and the Geraldine Eoad, Waitohi, and the ford at the Waihi Creek have been scoured by the recent flood. The east approach to the footbridge by the Manse has been carried away by the flood. Planks have been placed on trestles as a temporary means of allowing the bridge to be used. " Eoad through Education Eeserve 1400—There are about 53 chains of this road that could be made passable for light traffic by forming it, with a ditch on one side. The probable cost of doing this would be per chain, or £— for the 53 chains. The remainder of this road-line runs through very peaty and soft swamp, and would be very expensive to form so that it could be used for any traffic. "A team, with plough and scoop, is wanted for about two weeks on the Waitohi Downs roads. "F. Archer." The Overseer was authorised to provide a team, as suggested. DISPUTE. The High School Board wrote two letters, acknowledging their error in erecting a culvert on dyne's Road, expressing regret at having done so, and promising to keep the culvert in repair, and replace it by a concrete culvert whenever it became necessary. The Board accepted this offer and explanation. BATES The Clerk was instructed to sue defaulting ratepayers immediately, and the Board then adjourned-
