LICENSING COMMITTEES.
GERALDINE, , The annual meeting of this. Commiteee was held in the Courthouse, Geraldine, at noon on Thursday last. Present— Messrs W. 8. Maslin (Chairnan), N. Dunlop, J. W. Pye, W. Coltman, and M. Connolly. ; minutbs. ■ The minutes of .the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ' POLICE REPORT. The Inspector’s report on the licensed houses in the district was read and considered satisfactory; One or two trifling repairs were ordered to bo made at the Crown and Bush Hotels.
LOCAL OPTION. The result of the Local Option Poll was laid upon the table, the Result being against an increase of licenses in the district.
IBSEWALS. Applications for the' renewal of licenses were read from Messrs R. Taylor (Geraldine Hotel), T, Markham (Crown Hotel), and M. Spillane (Bush Ipn). The applicants in each case asked to have the time of doling extended to 11 o’clock. ■ Mr Coltman moved that the houses be closed at 10 o’clock. He was fully aware that the extra hour meant an increase of revenue to the Town Board of £l6, but he questioned if the money thus got would be more ' profitable than closing at 10 o clock. Mr Coltman’s proposition was not seconded, and after a short conversation on the matter the renewals- were g ranted, the time of closing being ex- . tended to 11 p.m. . • The Committee then adjourned.
TEMUKA. The annual meeting of the above Committee waa held at noon yesterday. Present—Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Ensor, and Blyth. Apologies were. A letter was reiid; from Mr Stubbs stating that the Local Option Poll taken was against any increase in licenses, ' police BEPOBT. The police report on the various houses, was .. most favorable. Constable Morton added that the only house he complained of was Thomas Farrell’s, of Winchester, which was Only fairly furnished, but it was kept very clean and well conducted, th« fire escapes had been put in it in '‘'ddmnliaiysV' vHtb' instructions.. He ‘‘ had never seen the Oran Hotel oetter conducted. The accommodation, even to the paddocking, was first class. . t conditional licenses. > The Clerk suggested they ought to fix what the conditional licenses ; should be for any day during the ▼ear. For. instance, such licenses ffere sometimes required for cricket matches, football matches, sports, etc. It was decided to let the matter 1 stand as at present. All the, licenses ~ ? were renewed, the Chairman expressing great .satisfaction with the way the house# had been conducted. . LICENSE PEES. Mr Peter Coira asked whether they would fix the license at £45. They were rated in Temuka as in a borough, and in boroughs the fee was £4O. The Clerk explained that the fee was £4O up to tea o’clock, and £5 for an eleven,o’clock . license. - .The. Committeethen looked up the A ct, and said it gave no option in the matter. The Committee could not reduce the The meeting then adjourned.!
