London, June 6. The death is announced of the Earl of Seafield. , ! . This announcement is or interest to Few Zealand readers principally from the fact that the successor to the title is a resident in this colony, namely, Viscount Heidhaven,, who, it will. be remembered contested unsuccessfully the Oamaru seat in the House of Eepreaentatives in 1885. Lord Beidhaven has had an eventful experience in the colony, and it is stated acted as bailiff at Oamaru for ,a time. ;He is ycrr popular m that town,' is was shown by the fact that at the election referred to he managed to make an exceedingly good stand against such an old favorite as MrShrimski... He married in 1874 Anne Trevor Corry, daughter of Major George Thomas Evans, of Clooneavin, Otago, and has three sons and three daughters, living. His lordship is forty-one years of age. The late Earl of Seafield sat in the Douse of Lords as Baron Strathspey, was born in 1817, and succeeded to the title in 1884, He was formerly a Captain in the 42nd Foot. He was a Vice-Lieutenant of Morayshire, and • sat as Conservative M.P. for Elgin and Nairnshire from 1868 to 1874, When he was defeated. The lands of the Earl of Seafield are set down at 305,930 acres; a*d the annual rental at £7B 227. The forests alone extend over 41,371 acres at £3O an acre, .in 1866, their wood was valued at £1211.130. Strahspey alone is expected to yield £50,000 a year m -thirty years’ time from its 19,315 acres r J he encumbrances of the estate were stated in 1884 to amount to £BOO,OOO. —Press. ;
