RAUKAPUKA LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The annual meeting of this committee was held in the courthouse, Geraldine, on Wednesday last. Present Messrs W. U. Slack (Chairman), C. G. Tripp, Hon. L. Walker, W. E. Barker, and A. H. Brisco. MINCTB3. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. fIOHRESPONDENCB. A reply was received from the Under Secretary for Justice, Wellington, stating that the Committee’s request for amalgamation could not be granted. At the previous meeting it had been decided that as there were only four public houses in the Baukapuka district as now constituted, and as the district had so recently been divided, and a new district (the Geraldine Licensing District) formed, the suggestion be made to Government to abolish the Baukapuka District and reunite with the Geraldine District as the existence of the two Committees led to a greater expense. The Under Secretary’s letter referred to the above suggestion, which had been made to Government. A considerable amount of discussion took place upon the subject and it was finally resolved: “ That the correspondence re the abolition of the Baukapuka Licensing District be forwarded to the member for the district, the Hon. L. Walker, Hon. J. B, A. Acland, and the Hon. T. Wigley, asking for an amendment in the Licensing Act 1882, so as to allow districts to amalgamate, the advantages derived from such amalgamations being very apparent in certain cases, and saving unnecessary expense.” The police report on the licensed houses in the district was considered satisfactory.
