Previous to 1881 the greatest power put into one ocean-going vessel was about 8000 indicated horse-power but the Italians now have two veesels of 18,000 indicated horse-power each. An interesting relic of Burns fetched 205 guineas at an auction in London. It consisted of the transcript in Burns' own handwriting of several of his poems. The largest steamer in the world, the City of York, constructed to carry 2000 passengers, has just been launched at Glasgow. It is shortly to be followed by a twin ship, the City of Paris.
