Correspondence was read and dealt • with as follows: Prom the Clerk, Christchurch City - Council, enclosing copy of petition against the use of the totalisator, and requesting the Board to co-operate in the endeavor to abolish the totalisator. —lt was decided to let the petition lie upon the table for signature, but the Board declined take any responsibility in connection with the patter. ' , Prom Messrs Smithson, Raymond, and Smith, solicitors, Geraldine and Timaru, advising the Board of changes in the firm, and requesting the Boards patronage.—After discussion it was decided to defer the appointment of a solicitor for the present. From the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, requesting that the Board's contribution for the half-year, £7 2s, be paid into the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru. -—Passed. From the Rev. G. Barclay, acknowledging receipt of the Board's letter re gorse upon roads, and promising to attend to the same as soon as convalescent. WATER-SUPPLY. A report of the probable cost of a low-level water-supply for the town was received from Messrs Meason and Marchant, Timaru. The report ran as follows: — " Report on and estimate of cost of a low-level water-supply to the town of Geraldine. Description of work proposed: At a point about 55 chains aboye the Geraldine road bridge water could be taken from the Waihi river hy means of a filter-!)ax sunk therein. , T*his would discharge into an open race graded along the river terrace to the road bridge, the water being carried over the intersecting gully in a timber flume. Under the main road, near the west end of the bridge, a concrete culvert would be laid, thence the race would be in open cuttings on the north-east side of the road to a point about 9 chains above Mr Mundell's auction rooms. There another concrete culvert would be laid under the main road to carry the water on to the south side, from whioh it would jun in an open race down to the town channels. Careful levels have been taken along the line proposed, which show that there is ample fall tor the effective and economical construction of the works suggested. Our estimate for the construction of the works is not exceeding £l5O including engineers, but nut including any charges for possible land compensation claims. Distribution of water: Having Bhown the feasibility and moderate costof bringing the water into the Town, it remains for the Board to consider the question of its .distribution : Whether it shall be •conducted along concrete channelling throughout the Town Board District, ,or turned into the natural channels *bout the town, A low level service,

such as proposed, would be of use only for cleansing the channels, or by means of constructing concrete tanks underground it would provide a supply for fire extinguishing purposes by the use of a manual fire engine. We do not think that the supply proposed can ever be looked upon as capable of conversion into a high level service by pumping a part of it into an elevated reservoir by means, say, of hydraulics, rams, or other water raising appliances, and that if such a high level service is e?er required, its Bource must be looked for elsewhere. "Meason and Marchant, " Civil Engineers, Timaru." The report was received. ranger's report. The Banger's report for the month was laid upon the table. overseer's report. The Overseer's report was read and dealt with as follows :
