NEW PUBLIC SCHOOLHOUSE, WINCHESTER.
Since the fire which destroyed the public schoolhouse at Winchester several months ago, great inconvenience has been experienced by the children in thatdistrict. Some of them have had to be accommodated at the old Mechanics’ Institute, while others have had to travel daily to Temuka. In a few days, however, this state of things will be altered, as the new building, which was begun some little time ago, is now rapidly approaching completion. When finished it should be capable of accommodating the children of the neighborhood for some time to come. The situation of the school is excellent, being a dry spot and very central. The school is close to the railway station, and at tht same time close to the main road, standing as it does on a cornet section. The building faces the railway line, but the appearance it presents from this point of view is not a handsome one, as another window is needed in the gable end to give it uniformity. The school is what is known as a T shaped building. Internally it is high and it is well ventilated. The rooms—there are two large ones—are 18ft by 30ft. The height from the floor to the ceiling being about 13ft. They are each lighted with three mullioned windows of 16 panes, each of the ordinary school pattern. At the rear of, and adjoining the building, towards the main road, are two lavatories, each about 7ft by 12ft. Both of the large rooms have open fireplaces and grates. The building, with the exception of the lavatories, stands on a concrete foundation. All ths rooms are match-lined throughout. A ventilator is erected over each class room, A few days will see it finished, and it will be opened on Monday next.
