A case was beard at Waipawa on Friday, wherein A. W. Gould, solicitor, was charged by Dr. Mirbach with committing perjury. After hearing the evidence the Bauch dismissed the case. Steerage passengers by the Mariposa, lately released from quarantine, complain of the treatment to which they were subjected on the steamer. They state that the passenger who developed smallpox was not isolated at once, but allowed lo reman, in and about the sleeping apartment and mess-room for some time ; and further complain that the water supplied them was dirty and greasy, although there was plenty of good water on board, whilst the bread was half baked and sour, and tho steerage dirty and unventilated. It is s»id, however, the captain at once took steps to remedy the complaints as soon as he heard of them.

PEEL FOREST HORriODLTJRAL SOCIETY.

President— Hon. J. B. A. Acland. Yice-Presidents—G. j. Dennistoun, Esq., A. Hawdon, Esq., and E. H. Irvine, Esq. Committee —Messrs W. E. Barker, E. Thew, J. Moffat, J. Pithie, S. Rae, J. Ea», W. Hanford, H. Sowerby, F. Newman, and Geo. Jenkins, Judges— Messrs J. Pye, J. Moffat, and M. Coombs. Treasurer—W. Johnston. Secretary—o. GK Roskruge.

The annual exhibition of this Society was held in the Scotsburn Schoolroom on Friday last. The weather was anything but favorable for such a gathering, and the attendance was in consequence limited. In view of this the Committee decided to keep it open on the following day. The Show itself was, considering the season, very good, and the arrangements made set it off to the best advantage. In the centre of the room, and running the whole length of it, was erected a bench, upon which the pot plants and cut flowers were placed. Round the room were benches for the vegetables, fruit, etc. The bouquets made up by the children and the collection of vegetables grown by boys for competition for Mr W. E. Barker’s prize were exhibited in a room by themselves. In pot plants Mrs Irvine came first with a large and varied collection that honestly deserved the prize it obtained. Mrs S. Eae came next with another really fine collection loaded with bloom, but not so varied as the former. Of cut flowers there was an exceptionally good display, made principally by Mr J. Moffat, gardener for the Hon. J. B. A. Acland. This gentleman enters for exhibition only, and his exhibit of cut flowers, comprising as it did 36 kinds, or 116 varieties, was a treat to look at, and would have been a credit to any show. His exhibition of fruit and nuts, too, from Mr A eland’s estate was a fine one, Miss E. Acland’s exhibit of flowers grown by herself was also a splendid one. In vegetables, the only exhibitor in the class for gardeners was Mr J. G. Dennistoun, and he obtained a well-merited first for a very even and really good collection. Among the amateurs there was keen competition, and the various exhibits indicated plainly that gardening is by no means neglected in the Peel Forest district. In this class Mrs Lorgelly and Messrs F. Newman and H. Sowerby were very successful. The palm for vegetables, however, must certainly be awarded to Mr Moffat. His exhibit in this class, for exhibition only, consisting of 26 kinds, or 52 varieties, was a perfect picture, and was enough to make the mouth of any vegetarian water. Mr Moffat also goes to the trouble of naming each article, which makes the collection very interesting to those who have gardens. For all his exhibits he obtained a highly commended Mr J. Pye’s exhibit of rhubarb and potatoes, for exhibition only, was also highly commended by the judges Altogether the Committee are to be congratulated upon the excellent display made. ihe efforts they put forth were honestly worthy the success which crowned them. The highly commendeds awarded to the judges (Messrs J. Pye, J. Moffat, and M. Coombs) for their exhibits for exhibition only were given by the Committee. Our thanks are due to the Secretary, Mr Eoskruge, for the valuable assistance he rendered our representative. The following is the prize list:—
