A married woman named Charlotte Johnson was found dead in her bed at Dunedin on Monday morning. She wag sixty-six years of age. F. Plummer, who is now confined in Wellington gaol under sentence for burglary and sending threatening letters to Dr Philson, of Auckland, has written to the last-mentioned gentleman expressing fervent and heartfelt sorrow for. the wrongs he committed, and stating his willingness to make full restitution to Dr Philson. Plummer states that there are many whom he wronged pecuniarily, and when free again, next to serving his God, the first concern of his life shall be to make restitution to the last penny to all.
A dead body has bsen found near Whangarei on the beach at high water. It is believed to be that of one of the crew of the Truant which capsized on Boxing Day. The natives have interred the body. The police authorities have received information that a Belgian named Joseph Seriac, arrested in Sydney for house robbery, was found to have in his possession some property stolen in the recent Auckland burglaries. At the Napier Education Board on Tuesday it was stated that it would not be necessary to reduce the salaries or allowances Of teachers. The Government have decided to withdraw from sale the Kurow runs at present, regarding the throwing open for settlement of which a deputation of intending settlers waited on the Minister of Lands while he was at Oamaru. As soon as convicts havj been sent to the fortifications »t Wellington, the Permanent Militia will be brought into barracks, and will undergo musketry training, under Captain Coleman. Should any of them be found unfit for the active duties required of them they will be dispensed with. Captain Coleman, who has recently been appointed cavalry inspector for New Zealand, intends to visit each cavalry company when they go into their annual encampment, and will then give them instructions in theirMuties, Over £IOO has been subscribed at Dunedin for the North Otago match at the New Zealand Rifle Association meeting. The sum is expected to be largely increased.
On Tuesday morning a shark measuring eight feet six was caught off the beach close to town, at the same spot where a man named Grant was attacked. The shark is believed to be the identical one that injured the man and caused the loss of his arm. The fish was caught with a small fishing line and p’ayed until an opportunity of shooting it through the head presented itself. The shark is now being exhibited for the benefit of the injured man and his family. Several leading citizens have offered to subscribe the • necessary amount to have the fish prepared for the local museum, At Christchurch on Tuesday the inquest was resumed on the body of Mrs Walsh, which was exhumed last week. Ths jury returned a verdict that there was no evidence to show that death resulted otherwise than from natural causes.
Some excitement has been caused at Auckland by the publication of the details of the death of a lunatic named Edwards at the Asylum. It is stated that he was found dead in bed, and it is alleged that there is an insufficient staff of attendants. Dr. Cremoni objected to a man acting on the jury who had been recently discharged from the position of Asylum Warder.
