INCISIVE.

The Gisborne evening paper, referring to a recent meeting of the Harbour Board remarked: —“A legislative nonentity like Dr Newman could have accomplished little barm bad be not been aided by tbe dissemination of lying statements circulated by a few worthless rascals who disgrace and injure Poverty Bay by their presence. Those individuals are already so far sunk in public estimation that it would be useless to waste words upon them. They are people who make the Bay stink in the nostrils of outsiders.”

To this the Gisborne Independent (controlled by Flora Baldwin) makes an equally choice reply as followslt is the “ worthless rascals ” who are squandering the loan and the ring of vampires who, under the cloak of a Pecksniflian respectability and canting assumption of a hollow- make-believe integrity, are the local skunks whose stench is wafted afar and whose presence poisons the whole moral atmosphere of the district. These are the false “ rascals ” who, for their own selfish aims and sordid ends, disseminate lying statements and concoct “cooked” accounts. These are the “ worthless rascals ” who through their pliant tools and sycophantic toadies, reduce and besmirch the names of honest and fearless men who are disinterestedly fighting the public’s cause, and using their untiring efforts to thwart the vile and dishonest machinations of those who are leeching the life’s blood of the district. These are the vampire “ rascals ” who squirm and crawl iuto every place of trust and usurp every emolument for the purpose of practising their knavery and despoiling the public exchequer. These are the wolves in sheep’s clothing, the thieves who, while “ making good their flight, bawl ont, ‘S'.op thief!’ with all their might.”
