A curious point has arisen at Wellington in connection with the Licensing laws. One of the city h-fcsls is found, since a recent extension, to stand in two licensing districts. There is a bar extension and it is contended » fruah license must be pail, but there is no bar within the meaning of the A'O io the old poition, and it may be possible that this fact keeps the licensee within tl e law. The poi t is under the oomtider-iiion of the authorities.
Mrs Emm i Field, Alexandra street, Auckland, commiticd suicide by drowning n man f in the Domain pond. Deceased was a widow nod bad boon law-spilted since the denih of lier husband three week* ago. The body was found cn Sunday at noon and in the vicinity of the pond were a
paras©', bonne*, and dress, in (he pocket of which was a letter addressed to Dr McK-llar, enclosing £3 for medical attendance and stating her intention to drown herself. Deceased was 47 years of ago, and had no relatives in the colony. Yesterday morning at two o’clock a fire on Mount Roskill Road, Auckland, destroyed Lyell’s grocery store and dwelling, Fitch’s drapery store and dwelling, and a cottage owned and occupied by Armstrong. No water was supplied. The furniture and stock was nearly all saved. An incipient fire at Lamb’s flour mills, Fort street, Auckland, was discovered early on Sunday morning. Very little damage was done
John Wallace, of Papatoitoi, Auckland, died on Saturday from creeping psralytis. Thomas Corkwell, his brother-in-law, died suddenly the same day from heart disease. At a public meeting at Tauronga resolutions were passed strongly urging Government to open Crown lands under free selection, and asking the Minister of Lands to set aside 600 acres of the Papatoi block, now being purchased from the Natives, as a pensioner settlement, under the proposed scheme for the introduction and settlement of pensioners. The block is excellent land, and wdl suited to the purpose. The Anglican Synod, Dunedin, has carried resolutions practically in favor of grants to denominational schools. Bishop Neville, Dunedin, has intimate 1 bis intention of visiting England next year.
