AUCTIONEERS’ REPORT. timaru. Messrs Grade, Maclean and Adam report for the fornight ending Saturday »s follows: Horse*.— entry on the Ist inat., was a small one, and sales were difficult to effect. To-day we entered over 30 head, amongst which were some extra good draughts and harness horses, but only in a few instances did buyers’ estimates of value come up to owners’ expectations, consequently but little business resulted. We quote best draughts at from £lB to £24 10s, medium £lO to £l6, medium to good hackneys £8 to £ls 10s, light ard weedy £3 to £6 10s. Cattle —At Washdyke on Thursday last, the fat pns were well filled with good quality cattle, and most of Mia best lota sold at fully 20s per lOOlbs. Store cattle are in good demand, and any lots coming to band from date will realise fair prices. We sold 3 bullocks at £6 ss, 6at £6, 12 at £4 3s 6d to £5 12s 6d, and 35 head stores at—for calve* 14s to 16s, yearling* 25s to 325, cows £2 to £5. Sheep—There was a full supply of fat sheep at Washdyke on Thursday, nearly all of which were sold at equal to late rates. The entry of stores was confined to a few pens of hoggets. Our sales are: —250 merino wethers at from 7s 6d to 83 lOd, 100 crossbred wethers at 13s, 42 at 12s 3d, 130 fat ewes at 11 s 91, 71 at 10s, 65 2-tooiha at 9s 41, and 74 hoggets at 8s 6d.
Skins—At our regular sale on Wednesday we catalogued over 3000 skins. Competition throughout the sale was rather dull, and prices were a shade lower than the previous sale, but crossbreds sold at up to 5s sd, merinos up to 4s 9d, and country skins in proportion. Tallow—We sold during the week 4 tons rough fat at from fie 6d to 9a per cwt. Country Sales -On the 26th ult, we held a clearing sale on account of Mr John Mitchel 1 , at hi* farm, Totara Valley. There was a large and influential attendance of buyers, and stock and implements sold as follows :—Crossbred hoggets 8s 6d, crossbred ewes and lambs 11a fid, draught horses up to £25 10s, buggy mare £25, dairy cows £5 to £6 10<, yearlings 25s to 40s.
AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, Sept. 28. Quotations are as follow ; Wheat—Fair sales forchickfeed at 3s fid to 2i 9d per bushel. Barley—Small demand. Capa seed, 3* ; feed sorts, 3s 3d to 3s 6d per bushel. Bran—Weak at 7£d to 8d per bushel. Butter—Dull, Beat, in keg, 6d to 7d ; roll sorts, 7d; factory make, 7d to 8d per lb. Chaff —At Darling Harbor yesterday best oaten sorts, in bundles, realised 4s to 5s ; inferior, 2s 3d to 3s fid ; straw, in bags, Is 6d to Is 8d per cwt. On the wharves best Victorian sorts realised £5 to £5 6s ; inferior sorts from £2 per ton. Cheese—Fair ihqnity. Colonial, 3d to 4d; loaf, 6d per lb. Eggs—Easier at 9d to lOd per dozen. Hams—Dull of sale. Colonial, 6d to 8d ; New Zealand, lOd to lid per lb. Bacon—Selling readily. Hand-cured, fid to fijd ; machine-cured, 4d to 5d ; New Zealand, fid to 8d per lb. Lard —Dull. Beat, in bladder, 3d to 4d per lb; in bulk, 2d per lb. Pollard—lnactive at 7£d per bushel. Maize—Steady demand for prime river sorts at 3« 8d to 3s lOd per bushel. Oats—Fair demand. Prime feed sorts, 2s to 2s 3d ; milling, 2s 3d per bushel. Onions—Easier. Victorian sort*, £2 IBs per ton. Peas—Quieter demand. Common blue boiling sorts, 3s 9d to 4s ; grey sorts, scarce at 3s 9d per bushel. Potatoes Market slightly excited, owing to the smallpox scare in Tasmania, Circulars, £3 10a ; New Zealands, £2 10a per ton. Oct. 7. New Zealand wheat is unchanged at 3s 3d to 3s 4d ; New Zealand oats, Is lOd to 2s 2d ; maize, 3s fid to 3s Bd. Adelaide, Oct. 7. Adelaide wheat is steady at 3a Sd te 3a fid. Floor is quoted at £8 5s to £9.
ENGLISH MARKETS. London, Oct. 7. Adelaide wheat, ex store, is unehanged at 33s fid, and New Zealand 30a to 33a. Adelaide flour remains at 23a. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,600,000 quarters, and for the Continent 235,000 quarters. Australian tallow of average quality remains at 22s fid for beef, and 23s fid for mutton. New Zealand frozen mutton, prime quality, is unchanged at 4d per lb. Oct. 8. The wheat market is firmer, but business is inactive. Russian, American, and Indian consignments are cleared. An Australian off-coast cargo has been sold at 30a 9d. The new crops to arrive in December and January have been sold for shipment from Loudon at 32* 3d. Wheat on the spot shows an advance of fid. New Zealand long-berried is quoted at from 31* to 335. The American mpply is much reduced.
