WAS IT REASONABLE?
TO THE EDITOB. Sin, —Was it reasonable on the part of Mr Joshua Page at the hustings, while admitting the serious position of the colony, to ask the electors to support a candidate who may in the course of time deveiope into a very fair representative ? We want a man who who is equal to the position now. If Mr Page, as a farmer, found his affairs in a serious position, and he wanted some one to see after them (not being able to do so himself) would he select a person wholly ignorant of ordinary farm work, but who in a few yeara might make a good farm manager? He would not. He would select a man who was already fitted for the position, well knowing that if he selected an inexperienced person he might be ruined. The electors should ignore Mr Page's advice, which waß not reasonable, and support Mr Twomey —a man whose past experience fits him for the position.—l am, etc., r « Commos Sense. THE ELECTION. TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —By your permission I would iika to say a word or two through the colurmu of your impartial and widely circulated paper, which, I think, through the whole of the campaign has done justice to each candidate for election at the poll so c'oaa at band. Ia Mr Rolleston'd speech at the nomination he said he had hitherto said nothing at all against his opponents and then went on to 6how tip one, leaving the other quite free. No one would wis!) to hear him say anything against his other opponent, but does it not show that it is not the gentlemen contesting the election with Mr Rolleston or their views, but the fear of the stronger opponant winning the election which caused him to speak. I need not say anything on what Mr Rolleston said, at Geraldine at the nomination, or at his last three or , four meetings. Mr Rolleston's intention in again visiting the three largest centres of population during the last few days, taking Geraldine the very last night, is surely too patent to the electors of Rangitato. No doubt the electors will take Mr Rolleston as he appeared in his first addreß6es. And again, taking Mr Rolleston's own words (or words to this effect) : " If be should be beaten in this election, ha would not be Ion? before he again had a seat in Parliament."" Now, did ever such facilities offer in any contest to please all ? • The supporters of Mr Rolleston, who s<»y they need men of practical knowledge of politics, have only !o wait a short time (in the event of Mr Boxton winning the contest) and then the Hon;, W. Rolleston will go marching in round some corner which we know not of. the Government having probably been formed, Mr Rolleston can bo an independent and more useful man, not having to follow so closely a " North Island " representative, as he now does (and cons°qnently having to vote sometimes against bis conscience), and (Jia country will have the services of Mr Buxton with bis good qualities, his outspoken straightforward way of speaking 1 , his practical knowledge of farming nnd its requirements, bis adherence ti the present Government, etc., etc, Let the electors use their own judgment, and not be gulled by the denunciation of Party as against Party, but lit each voter go to the poll on the coming Monday with the good of his district as well »s the good of tbe coleny at large at stake, and vote for the political, temperanco, and moral good of tfie colony ; every man who has a vote using it, as such a privilego may not always ha given to the working man.—l am, etc., An ElecToti.
