MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Board was held in the Eoad Board office, Peel Forest, on Friday, the 16th instant. There were present—The Hon. J. B. A. Acland (Chairman), Messrs G. J. Dennistoun, E. Thew, Mackay, and 0. G. Tripp. The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. The correspondence of the past month was read as follows; From the Levels Eoad Board, requesting that the road from the Spur Eoad near Eaincliff to the Opihi be formed.—The Clerk was directed to reply referring the Levels Board to the Mount Peel Board’s letter of January 1886, and stating that as that letter had never been answered the Board had taken no action in the matter. From Mr Charles Boutcher, requesting the Board to improve the ford in the Opuha river near Eobb’s Hut.—Eesolved “ That as there is a traffic bridge across the river at this point, the Board does not see the necessity of keeping up a ford as well”
From Mr Henry Ford, asking if the Board would put on a ranger to impound stray cattle on ihe as he had suffered great damage to his fences through stray cattle, and that he could get no satisfaction from the owners as they say they have Mr Deunistoun’s permission to run them. — Mr Dennistoun stated that he had never given permission to any person to run cattle in the Orari Gorge or elsewhere, and would recommend that Mr Ford be informed of the fact. Proposed by Mr Tripp, seconded by Mr Thew, and carried Colonial Secretary be written to asking whether any subsidy would be paid this year to Local Bodies, upon rates collected by them.” Proposed by Mr Tripp, seconded by Mr Dennistoun, and carried—“ That notice be given to all persons having gorse growing upon roads adjoining their land, to have the same grubbed up.” Eesolved—“ That a letter be writen to the Geraldine Eoad Board, drawing attention to the dangerous way in which heaps of stones have been placed upon the formed part of the Eangitata station road, and calling attention to damages of £l5O being given against the Taranaki County Council, for damage done by stones being left upon a public road in a similar manner.” Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Mr Dennistoun, and carried “That a letter be written to Messrs Moody and Ziesler, requesting payment of an order forwarded to them by the Board, or, failing payment, to return the order.” Proposed by Mr Tripp, seconded by Mr Thew —“ That the Geraldine County Council be charged the sura of £1 for the trees cut in the line of the water-race in the Eoad Board plantation, Eeserve 1801, through which the race runs, being a small sum to show the Board’s right to the land and timber, and that the trees be cut down under the supervision of the Board’s Overseer.”
Proposed by Mr Dennistoun, seconded by the Chairman, as an amendment granted the Engineer of the County Council to cut down any trees actually in the line of the water race through Reserve 1801, such trees to be cut down under the supervision of the Overseer to the Board,” The amendment was carried, Messrs Dennistoun, Mackay, and the Chairman voting for, and Messrs Tripp and Thew against it. The Overseer reported that the slip on the Kakahu and Burke’s Pass Road had given way, leaving the road in a very soft state. —After some discussion it was resolved to form a short deviation to avoid the soft places. Accounts to the amount of £l3O 2s 8d were passed for payment. The Board then adjourned.
