CONCERT AT ORARI.
The concert in aid of the funds to establish a school library at Orari came off on Mcuday evening last, and was a decided success. The schoolroom was crowded to excess, the audience inc uding many from all the neighboring districts. The weather, although somewhat cloudy, kept fine until’ towards morning, when rain set in, and ended in a regular down* pour. The Hon. W. Rolleston occupied the chair, and after a few appropriate remarks, in which he briefly alluded to the object of the meeting, the first part of the programme was opened by an overlure (Abyssi'iDn march) by Miss Qimson, followed by a song, “Sailing,” by Mr Kett (Timaru); song, “Caller Herring,”, by Miss Fogotiy (Timaru) ; recitation, “ Tale of Tuscany,” by Mr Griffiths ; song, by Miss McNair; comic song, “ Dancing round the Apple Tree,” by Mr Binskin ; song, “ Land of the Leal,” by Mi«s J. McLeod (Rangitata); soog, “ Wr >p the F ag around me,” by Master Storey (Temuka); song, “ Robin Adair,” by Mrs Owers (Timaru); comic song, “Simple Young Man,” by Mr Rent'; song, “Five o’clock Tea,” by Miss May ; rec tatian, by Mr Chapman; . duet, “ Home to our Mountains,” Mr and Miss Kett; song, “ Mussels and Cockles," by Mr Early ; song, by Miss B. Coles ; song, “There was a Lad was Born in Kyle,” by Mr N. n-hton ; song, “Thy Voice, *’ by Miss Ghuaon.
After an interval of five minutes, the secmd part was opened by a song, “Wnhio a Side of Edinboro Town,’ by Mr Graham (Belfield), followed by a song, “ Bonnie Hills of Scotland," Miss McNair; recitation, “Spanish Champion," by Mr Griffiths ; song, “ I Love no a Laddie but One,” oy Miss Fogerty ; com : o song, “ 0 Love, will you be mine ?" by Mr Binskio ; song, “ Ehren on the Rhine,” by Miss May; song, “ Pansy Blossoms,’’ by Mis« F. Coles; comic song, “ Oh, yon Girls,” by Mr Kent; song, ‘’Scot and Yet,” Mr George Hosio; song, ‘‘Far Away,” by Mrs Owers; reading, by Mr Chapman ; song “ Cam’ ye by Athol,” by Miss J. McLe >d-; song, * by Master Storey ; ooag, “The Standard on the Braes of Mar,” capitally rendered by Mr Hosie.
Moat of tbe performers were loudly encored, and they as heanily responded. When all seemed thoroughly bent .on doi g their beat, ii would be invidious to particu 'arise. Suffice it to say that the efforts of all were higiily appreciated by the audience. Valuable as, iatance was rendered by Mias Blyth (Temuka) and other ladies, is well as by Messrs SiiuoOq and K. McLeod, us accompanists. A vote of thanks to the pe> formers, and also to the Chairman, ended this part of the entertainment.
The room w;>s then cleared for dancmg, which was kept up with great spi rit and enjoyment until 5 o’o ock next morning. Music was excellently discoursed by Mr Morris (Timaru) assisted by o'hers, and Mr Binskin, as usual, made a ve*y cient MO. A liberal supp'y. of ..refreshments wan provided by the School Committee, and all seemed highly , pleased. No doubt the Committee’s ell tcb will be crowned wi*b success financially as well as otherwise.
