S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of this Board was held o» Thursday. Present Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), J, Jackson, R. A. Barker, J. Talbot, and the Rev. T, Jasper Smyth. In his opening statement the Chairman said Mr Menzios had gone to Pleasant Valley, and in consequence had resitted (he Hook mastership that Miss Buck had resigned her teacherehip at

Gapes’ Valley; and that Mr Gd (smith

had been appointed locum-Unms at the new school at Totara Valley, which it had been desired to open as quickly as possible. 4 letter was read from the Education Department in reply to a letter from the Board, stiting that the reduction in ihe capitation grant would continue until Parliament met and decided the question. Mr West, the architect, report'd that the work done at Totara Valley, at the master’s residences at Kakahu Bush and Sutherlands, and the additions to Fair Flow school had been competed m a satisfactory manner. He had had had the master’s residence at Upper Waitohi repai ei in a proper v ay, Mr Qow, the Bond's Inspector, reportsd that ho had had some improved school desks made, and they, haring been , inspected by the members, were approved of.

The Inspector reported that the an mal pupil teacher’s examination f was commenced oil the 28th Juno and concluded on the 2id of July. Fifty seven teachers presented themselves for examination, 31 of whom hold appointments and 20 were candidates for pupil-teachersbips. After hearing a report by the Inspector it was decided that the necessary steps be taken to constitute the Upper Waitaki North a school district. It is expected that 50 children will attend. Persons having p for third year and being employed by the Board, must enter into an apprenticeship for two yekrs from date of employment. Persons having posed * for the fourth year, must enter into an apprenticeship of two years from date of employment. “ Notes—(l.) In the of persons having passed the examinations prescribed for the fourth year, the Board provides no farther instruction on the part of the head teacher, and payment to the head teacher in respect to such pupil teachers ceases. (2.) Any fees derivable from the examination of pupil teachers under these additional regulations, and out of the due. course, to be the perquisites, in equal moieties, of the Inspector and the Sucrelary. ’ Amotion by the Rev. Mr Barclay on the subject will be discussed next Board day. The Rev, Geo. Barclay (convenor) reported or behalf of the Committee appointed to enquire into the working and ; organisation of the Te.nuka District High [ ? School as follows :—“(!) That the Head Master had been for aome time devoting too mnch attention to class teaching, and - not sufficient t» the work of general supervision ; (2) That the Head Master having submitted a new time-table to be in use for the future, the Committee approve of such table as involving important advantages to *ll the interest of the school ; (3.) That no additional teaching staff was needed at present; (4.) That in case of any temporary falling off from the average attendance from time to time, the Board should allow aome margin before, according to the scale, immediately reducing the staff.” At the request of Mr Smythe, the Secretary road statistics bearing on District High schools, and the remuneration to the staff of each. Mr John Talbot gave members the benefit of some figures he had culled fr >m ' the Education report bearing on certain schools in South Canterbury. A deputation from the Timaro School Committee requested that the Side School should be raised to the Third Standard, and the request was complied with. , ■ It was decided to call for tenders for supply of school furnilmo for three years. It was decided to constitute the Otipua Tillage Settlement a school district. Correspondence dealt with included letters— From Mr C. R. Shaw re Totara School, and asking that a Mistress should be appointed.—The Chairman said applications had been invited. %.■ Prom the Hon. L. Walker and Messrs •Hammond nod Rice re the new school at Rhubarb Pi t.—As it appeared a site had not been unanimously agreed upon, and the Rev. Mr Barclay whs not present, it ,was decided to postpone the matter till next Board day. From the Winche°ter Committee, pointing out the necessity of getting a new site for the school now Government , • surveyors were in th- district. The Com- . . mitteo recommended a site fronting the Park and Main‘Road.—The Secretary w as instructed to see Mr Fussell, of the Land t Office, Timaru, «nd to write to the Commissioner of Lands on the subject. ‘From the Milford Committee, asking for a grant 'in aid offencing, etc,—Half cost was 'granted.. It was decided to gazette the boundaries of the Sutherlands School District. Accounts were passed and the Board adjourned.
