TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting cf the Harbor B 'ard was held on Wednesday. Present - Ciptain J. H. Hotter (Chapman), and Messrs Acton, Gray, Morns, Wilson, Flatman, Kerr, and Manchester.

It was decided that the members of the Board.take partin the Jubilee procession in Timaru. Mr W, A. Wilson wrote stating that His Excellency the Governor had been pleased to approve of the plans of the Harbor works on the north wall and details thereof. —Acknowledged. Captain Clarkson, Deputy Harbormaster, applied for an increase of salary, and the application was referred to the Sunding Committee, several members expressing the opinion that the port was over officered.

The Standing Committee reported that they could not recommend the construction of the rubble wall further north than at first proposed. They recommend# I tha* the monoliths at the end of the pr> - sent breakwater contract be extra large, and that it be protected with random blocks of 35 tons. With regard to the angle of the fender piles, the Committee reported that they were not preptirad at present to recommend any alteration in the angle of the fender piles, but suggested that the Harbor Master should be instructed to keep vessels as far from the wharf as possible, and that the Railway Department be requested to*provide cranes with longer jibs. JRe the Norman M>cleod, the Committee reported that haying examined the Harbor Master, they did not understand why he should have permitted the barque Norman Macleod to continue striking against the fender piles from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. *« hen a line taken out to the chequered buoy would have kept her off, and ultimately did keep her well off the wharf. That there was an enor of judgment on the part of the Hvrbormaster in not using the Titan to run a line to the chequered buoy early in the day of February sth to save the Norman Macleod from further injury. That in future in all cases of bad weather at' am should be kept up on the tug, That Ihe Harbor Master be instructed to attend to all calls of masters of vessels in this port at night in cases of emergency.— After a short discussion, Mr Gray moved, and it was unanimonsly resolved—" That the report of the Committee be adopted, and that the Harbor Master (Captain Webster) receive oue month’s notice from July Ist to terminate his agreement with the Board!"

He requested permission to take the life boat, etc., out for the Jubilee procession, and pointed out that the barque Mebnock, just discharged at the wharf, had not once touched the wharf, owing to the dredge crane, with which she *»as worked, having a longer, jib than the railway cranes. Manilla rope was short.—The Harbor Master was authorised to get the rppe, and his requests wore granted. .(; The. Engineer, reported that but little except block making had been done during the month. A monolith was laid on the sth but was destroyed. Regarding the dredge, many of the parts were very rusty, and he thought redress should be sought from McEwan aod Co. He requested permission to purchase three eight-ton screw-jacks at £2 each in Weili' gtoni He had received no tenders for iron bark timber for slip, «nd a tender he had received for colonial-made cast-steel rollers he considered high. He had drawn up a report re the atone for the North, wall, and said the repairs to the paddle boxes of the Titan had been satisfactorily executed. Members bore out the Engineer’s statement as to the rusty state of parts of the dredge and expressed the opinion that some of the plates were o'd. The Engineer was instructed to specially report on the dredge, aod the Secretary to forward a claim to Messrs McEwan and Co. for damages. The screw jacks required are to bo purchased. It was resolved—“ That in the case of the s.s. Wakatipu calling here for cargo for intercolonial ports, and being unable .to work alongside the wharf, the Board is willing to pay onerthird the cost of labour in working the surf-boats, on the understanding that the steamer and the shippers each pay a further third ; that the Board ta held free from all re= sponsibili y, the steamer in each case employing labor and making all the rucoisury arrangements." The Timaru Boating Club were given a months notice to remove their shed. The tender of Ogilvie and Byers was accepted for erecting the dredge. The revenue for the mouth was— Wharfage, £5lO Is 2d ; harbor dues, £215 19s 3d ; total, £726 Os sd. Accounts amounting to £5358 9s 7d were passed for payment, and the Board rose. __________
