WESLEYAN MISSION.
The Rev. Mr Smalley and Mrs Smalley opened a mission in the Wesleyan Church, Temuka, last evening. There was a fair attendance. After the singing of a hymn and piayer being offered up by the Rev. Mr Thomas, the Rev. Mr Smalley took his text from Isaiah vi., 4*B. After a few remarks be said he bad been a Wesleyan Minister for the last 18 years, and this year he had been told off by the Conference for Evangelistic work. His sympathies, however, were broader than any Church, and the members of other churches were welcomed. He loved the Wesleyan Church beat,(but he loved all churches, and any of other denominations that would come, need not be afraid he would try to make Wesleyans of them. They could choose their own as soon as they were converted. He asked for the hearty co-operation of other churches, and if they came they would hear nothing but the name of Jesus preached to them. Some people objected to Evangelistic work, but he believed they *ere mistaken. Extraordinary measures, were necessary to arouse the people because they were preoccupied in their own affairs. They were commanded to “be filled with the Spirit,” and any one vho was not so was living in disobedience. It was as binding as “do not kill.” There should therefore be complete sanctification, individual effort, and prayer. The rev. gentleman then gave many illustrations of the efficacy of prayer, and after having spoken for about an hour intimated that the meeting would conclude, but that he would like such as were willing to work to stay behind, Several signified their intention to assist, and stayed in the Church, when arrangements for the mission were made. The Rev. Mr Smalley, although suffering from a cold, is a very pleasant speaker. He is very undemonstrative, apt in bis illustrations, very simple but choice in his language, and there is no straining after effect. He speaks slowly and in conversational tones, and there is a gentleness and a kindliness about his manner that is very pleasant. He will preach again Ibis evening in the Wesleyan Church, and on Sunday the mission will be continued in the Volunteer Hall.
