CONCERT AT TEMUKA.

A concert was given last Thursday evening in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, in aid of the cadets’ uniform fund. There was a good attendance. The concert was opened by the infants in the school singing two songs entitled “The Clock” and “The Watermill,” after which Mr K. F. dray appeared on the stage and said that in the absence of the Chairman he bad been asked to say a word. He had nothing to say except to explain that the concert was in aid of the fund for paying for the uniforms of their young soldiers. He was glad so many were present, and as there was a long programme be would say no more, but express a hope that would all enjoy themselves. Mr Ooltman sang a delightful song entitled “ Steering Home ” in good voice, and Miss Rowe gave a recitation, after which Mr Foster sang “ The Young Brigade ” in excellent voice and with good effect. He subsequently sang “ Anchored,” and was loudly applauded. Mrs Rout was in excelled voice, and sang in a finished and delightful manner, “ Tit for Tat,” and was encored. She responded by repeating a verse of the same song. Subsequently she sang “ A Bird in Hand ” splendidly. Miss Hitch, of Tiraaru, sang “ The Dim Hil's Far Away ” and “ The Golden Shore” in a fine mellow contralto voice of great compass and flexibility, and Mrs Root and Mr Foster sang the duet “ Gipsy Maid ” magnificently. It was one of the features of the concert. Miss Lee sang “ Pepita,” and as an encore “ The Minstrel Boy ” in a manner that took the audience by surprise, and elicited genuine and hearty applause. It is always invidious to draw a comparison between individual performers at an amateur entertainment, but without violating our usual custom in that way we may ‘ safely say that if Miss Lee’s singing was not the best next to Mrs Rout’s it was very near it. Miss Lilly Browu recited “ The Spanish Champion” with remarkible ability considering her age, md Mr Early brought down the bouse with a comic song. Messrs Andrews (clarionet), Fauvel (cornet), md Levens (piano) playei some nusical selections during the interval n a capital manner. Mies BJyth acsompanied many of the singers very effiliently, and the others were accompanied >y Mr Sydney Wolf, R.A.M. Mr Volf Also played a solo on the piano md received a most rapturous encore, o which he responded. His playing ras delightful. Most players complain f the piano, but after having heard Mr Volf playing upon it no one will believe lenceforth that it is bad, His playing ras magnificent, and the way he accomisnied the singing was masterly. The oncert wound up with “God Save, the }ueen.” i
