TIMARU HARBOR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbor Board was held yesterday. .Pre-sent-Messrs J. H. Sutter (Chairman), E. Acton, W. M. Sims, A. Hayes, J. W. Wilson, T. Teschemaker, and W. Moody. Mr Hayes verbally apologised for Mr Talbot's absence. Thenr- 11 of the? lust meeting were read and ■ irmed. The following correspondence was deult with : From the Marine Department notifying that the position of the Lyttelton wreck buoys had been gazetted ; also, ackno *- ledging the receipt of the Board's lett-r as to the anchorages in the harbor. From Mr R. Bonsfield, of Newcastle, N.S.W., asking for information in regard to the constitution, etc., of the Board, in view of forming a harbor trußt. —Intorm - tion supplied. From Messrs McEwan and Co., stating that the dredge was too far advanced for the whole of the Engineer's suggestions to be carried out. It was anticipated that tba dredge would be finished early in November; also, in regard to the cement, which they bad teat, and forwarding p an sod estimate for slip.—Referred to Standing Committee. A cablegram was received from Messrs McEwan and Co. to the effect that an extra strong boiler would cost £SO mor* and would entail a delay of seven weeks. —Left in the hands of the Chairman *.nd Engineer. From MrJC. Palliser asking the Board to reconsider the decision arrived at at the last meeting re his claim for extra work on the wharf.

Messrs Woollcombe, Pringle, and Bargefrede waited on the Hoard a« a deputation from the Wairaataitai Valley and presented a petitioD praying that something may be done to pretent the OTerflowing of the sea into the lagoon, which it was alleged was caused by the harbor works. Resolved application of Capt. Woollcombe and otbera cannot possibly be entertaiced, as the Board is by no means responsible for the action of the sea at the point referred to."

The Standing Committee reported advising the settlement of MrC. Pallia's claim ; that R. Balsom be paid at the fate of £8 per motith ; and that the Ganeral Manager of Railways be communicated" with re bringing into force a uniform rate for the landing of ballast.— The report was adopted, that part relating to Mr C. Palliaer's claim eliciting aome diccussion.

The Harbor Master reported the arrival of 31 vessels during the month and the of 29. He suggested that a fender pile ahould be placed at each corner, of the Moody Wharf and tbe berthage be ■orveyed by a diver previous to mooring Teasels alongside. He suggested ae a means of economising the use of hawsers at the wharf on vessels cables, that a spiral spring and rubber rider be obtained Bimilar to those in use in American ▼easels to relieve the strain on their cables when riding at anchor in a roadstead. The Engineer reported that one monolith had been laid during themoEth, which completed 150 feet of the present contract; that the random block protection work was nearly completed ; that the laying of the rails on the Moody wharf was proceeding rapidly; and that the other works w«re proceeding satisfactorily. The wharfage dues received for the month amounted to £454 Is lOd. Accounts to tbe amount of £2297 9s id were passed for payment and tke meeting terminated.
