CHESS.
A great chess tournament between eight players of Temuka and eight of Timaru took place in the Wallingford Hotel, Temuka, on Thursday last. Pjay commenced at 7.30, and terminated at 11 o'clock, each couple playing two games. The result was as follows:Temuka. Won. Timuru. Won, Dr Campbell ... 0 Mr Carroll ... 2 Mr Pub 2 Mr Taylor ... 0 Mr Hughes ... 1 Mr King ... 1 Mr Mason ... 1 Mr Einnerney... 1 Mr Nicholas ... 2 Mr Hasssll ... 0 Mr Bolton ... 0 Mr Wood ... 2 Mr Morton ... 0 Mr Edwards ... 2 MrMaginnia ... 0 Mr Clark ... 2 Total ... 6 Total ... 10 At the conclusion of the last game the players partook of an excellent supper, got tip in Mi Coira’g best style, and after the good thing were disposed of, Mr Morton proposed “ The health and happineas of Mr T. Hughes,” and expressed the great regret felt at learning that he was about leaving the district. The toast was drank with musical honors, and duly acknowledged. After having spent a moat enjoyable evening the party separated at a late hour. It is eften the unexpected that happens. ‘ It was expected the Temuka men wonld have won the match hands down, but instead of that they: were igDoroinously beaten.
