FOOTBALL.

TIMARU F. TEMUKA. The third match between the Temnka and Timaru teams last Thursday resulted in a victory, by 17 points to nil for Temuka. The game was played on the Temuka ground, and commenced'at 3 30 p.tn. For Temuka the fail-back was J, W. Yelvin (Captain), half-backe; Thruston, E. Smith, and G. Yelvin ; - quarterbacks : J. Russell and Gray ; forwards ; Haines, Stewart,. Shallard, Carr, Thomson, Blytb, Dyson, Polaschek, and J. Clinch. The Timaru team was placed as follows Full-back: Hughes (Captain); half-backs; Gerity, Carey, and Macintosh ; quarter-backs: Hobbs, and Strachan ; forwards : Reid, Bowie, Triggs, Kohn, Watkins, Kenny, Edwards, and Turnbull. Temuka having won tbs toss Yelvin decided to defend the west goal. Hughes kicked off, and Throston secured the ball and made a good run, bat was collared by the Timaru backs anil a scrimmage ensued, resulting in the ball being driven into the Timaru quarters, and Timaru had to force down. G. Yelvin secured the ball from the kick out, and passed to Russell, who did not gq far before he came to grief and a scrimmage gave the balj to E. Smith, who made a grand run into touch. Un the ball being thro im out it was secured by Macintosh who took it well into Temuka quarters, where he was collared by Clinch, and some scrimmaging was the result. The Temuka forwards worked splendidly and took the ball into Timaru quarters, where it was secured by Stewart who took it across the line. The Temuka Captain failed to score, and on the ball being again put in motion a series of scrimmages led to the ball being taken into Timaru’s quarters, where Gray, by a capital run, touched the ball between the posts. Bussell, having taken the kick, scored a goal. Little was done before time was called, \ after which Temuka kicked off, and very -I fast play ensued, the two Velvins, Smith, Thruston, and Gray playing splendidly. After some very hot scrimmaging, all in the Timaru quarters, G. Yelvin potted a beautiful goal from the field. No sooner was the ball kicked off than Thomson secured it, and carried it over the goal line, with a half-a-dozen Timaru men hanging on to him from the middle of the field, but J. Yelvin failed to score. The play after this was principally in the Timaru quarters, where Russell secured a goal by a splendid pot with bis left from the field. Some very play followed, with the result that two Timaru men were invalided and had to retire, and henceforward Temuka had it all their own way. lime was soon after called, the result of the game being as stated above. The most noticeable players for Temuka were the Yelvins, Smith, Thruston, and Gray. Everyone of the forwards worked splendidly—in fact, it would be difficult to select one as having done better than the others. Their packing together in the completely smothered Timaru, while their passing was dexterous and neat. Of the Timaru men, Hobbs Hughes, Macintosh, Gerity, Bowie, Strachan, and Edwards woiked well, and their forwards also played a good game, but were not by any means equal to Temuka. The umpires were -for Temuka Mr J. Ogilvie, and for Timaru Mr M. Shepherd, Mr W. King being referee. Luncheon was provided on the ground by the Temuka team.
