GERALDINE TOWN BOARD.
A special meeting of the Committee appointed by the Town Board to consider what work con'd be undertaken in the way of providing labor for those men who are most urgently in need of work in Geraldine, was held »t the Board’# office on Saturday )a*t at four o’clock. Present—Messrs R. H. Pearpoint (Chairman), T. Farrell, J. Huffey, and J. Mundell.
Thu Chairman briefly stated the purpose for which the meeting was called. Several pieces of work were then men tionoj as needing to be done. The Chairman said it would bo best to do that work first which was most urgently required. Ho thought the wnter-tables should be cleaned out, as they sadly needed it, and the large stones on the road in the town collected am' broken. Mr Farrell thought the planting of the willows needed seeinfr to. The Overseer aubmiltad a list of works wh'ch require immediate attent on, and which would supply work for the unemployed. It was resolved that the planting of the willows on the upper side of the dam non' the cemetery corner should be the first work done ; second, that the water-trbh-s throughout- th« town should be cleam-d up ; third, that t-'e big stones on tin roads should he broken ; fourth, that the road near Mr Henry’s and the junction of Wilson Street and High Street be metalled and put in good ordor. The number of men whose names were before the Board as requiring work wan eight, and of thesa three were already in the Board’s employ. It was decided to employ four of these each month, alternately, the men to he informed of this arrangement when first engaged. One man was chosen to be employed with those already engaged, tc constitute the first four, and in order that there might be no cause for complaint, the fourth man was drawn for by lot, which resulted in Mr R. Larkon being chosen. The rate of wages was fixed at 6s for first-class men : the horse work to be paid for at the rate of 14s per day, on , the same terms as the day laborers, viz., j month about.
It was decided to hold a meeting of the Board on Tuesday evening at 7.30 p.m,— to consider the proposed expenditure by the Board of a sum of £514 for necessary works, and also suggestion No. 8 of the Overseer, to lay a strip of asphalt throughout the entire length of the townin a ccordance with section 34 of the Town Districts Act 1881, which reads as follows “ That before making any such rate the Board shall cause an estimate to be p r epared ot the proposed expenditure of tli© Board during the period for which the rate is to be made, showing the sum already available for such purposes, the additional sura required, the total rateable value of rateable property on the valuation roll, and the rate thereon necessary to raise the money required and such estimate being approved by the Board shall be'publicly notified in the district at least seven days before making the proposed rate.” The meeting then terminated.
