S.C. HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday night. Present Messrs J. Jackson (Chairman), J. Talbot, A. Hayes, G. F. Clulee, and G, Y. Clarke. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received from the Premier’s office, asking for full particulars for the £IOOO subsidy granted to this Board. The Premier also stated that no allowance could be made for members’ travelling expenses, and for postage of letters, etc. A letter was received from the Waimate County Council asking the Board to refund the amount they had passed for Hospital and Charitable purpose*. After a short discussion, it was resolved “ That the account rendered by the Waimate County Council be referred to-, Messrs Hayes, Clulee, and the Chairman, and that the attention of tbs Committee so chosen be particularly drawn to the provisions of the Act bearing upon claims of this character, and the Committee so chosen have power to act as re paired.”— The Timaru Hospital accounts, amounting to £3OB 12s 9d, were passed for payment.—The plans of additions and alterations to the Hospital, which had been prepared by Messrs Me*son and Marchant were laid before the Board. The estimated cost of one part is £3500, and the part at the back of the buildings £I6OO. Some discussion took place as to ways and means. Mr Talbot was in favor of doing a part this year and a part next year, as it would be a serious thing if a rate bad to be struck, Mr Clulee thought it must all be done at the same time. The Chairman said the amount wanted was £3500, and the Board got £ISOO from the Government. He thought they could raise £IOOO extra this year, and get the other with a loan. Ultimately it was decided— “ That a special meeting of the Board be held on the 30th inst. to consider estimate of receipts and expenditure for the ensuing year, and that in the meantime the Chairman tnd the mover be appointed a Committee to ascertain whether satisfactory financial arrangements can bo made for including in the said estimate addition to Hospital as per plan submitted by Messrs Meason and Marchant,”—The Chairman stated that the Hospital buildings bad been insured in each of the local offices for £9OO, and the furniture for £IOO. They had also been insured in several other offices, the building for £450 and tha furniture for £SO. Mr Tabiaton, the caretaker of the Destitute Ward Department, waited on the Board and explained that he and bis wife were getting nothing for taking charge of the Ward beyond their food and shelter. There were at present 13 children and two women in the Ward, and he looked after them. After considering the matter, it was resolved—“ That Mr Tabiston be paid in future the sum of £1 per week for taking charge of the Destitute Ward.”—The Board then adjourned.
