TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Temnka School Committee was held last Thursday evening. Present—Messrs Hayburst (Chairman), Gray, Blyth, Bolton, and Lee, MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read From the Board of Education, stating that Miss Bertha Brown had been selected by the Committee of the Eangitira Valley School as teacher, and asking the Committee to relieve her as soon as possible of her duties, go ae to enable her to assume charge at Eangitira.—A second letter was read from the same source acknowledging receipt of Miss Brown’s resignation, and asking the Committee to recommend someone to fill her place in the Tensuka School, Also stating that it was expected the Committee were prepared to recommend Miss Florence Brown as successor to her sister.—The Chairman stated that be had, as requested, recommended Miss F. Brown, and bis action was approved. From the Head Master, stating that the average attendance was—Boys, 182; girls, 151; total, 833. Strict average : Boys, 127 ; girls, 100.2 ; total, 227.2. Working average ; Boys, 181.4 ; girls, 104,5 ; total, 236. Highest attendance, 256. CADET CORPS. The Head Master also forwarded the following i—“ Accompanying this you will find a list of those pupils whom we think qualified to form a cadet corps in connection with the school. Under Mr Cross, I think the proficiency in drill, etc., will be all that is required. This idea was suggested by him, and I am of opinion that every effort should be made to secure all the grants that are usually given by Government under such circumstances as we present. Perhaps yonr application would carry additional weight if soma accompanying recommendation be presented by our Member,” The Chairman said there were 37 names on the list. Some of them were put down at 11 years, and he thought that they would -not be taken under 12 years. Their heights varied. There was one aged 12 put down at 4ft 6in, while another aged 12 was sft 4in. Mr Gray did not think they ought to throw any cold water on it. The Chairman said the only expense would be to provide a rack to hold the carbines in. They would have to be kept in the school. Mr Blyth said that would not cost mncb. The Chairman said the uniforms would cost 12s. They would have to provide them, as oo grant was given by Government. He saw that Mr Ballance proposed giving such corps a grant. Mr Gray i They wont get it. On the motion of Mr Gray, seconded by Mr Lee, it was resolved—“ That the list of names in re cadet corps be for warded to Colon"! Bailey, with an intimation that the Committee are in favor of the movement.” THE SECRETARY. A letter was rend from Mr G. P. Wood, forwarding his resignation, as Secretary, and stating that as the Committee’s funds were so low he would not claim the two months’ salary due to him. '

It was resolved— <( That the resignation of Mr Wood be accepted, and that a vote of thanks be accorded to him for his kindness in not claiming the salary due to him, and that the Committee desire to express their appreciation of the efficient manner in which he discharged bis dntiea daring the time be held the office of Secretary MISCELLANEOUS. A letter was read from the Education Board, intimating that owing to (be resignation of Mr Steward, a vacancy bad occurred on the Board, and asking the Committee to nominate a member.— On the motion of Mr Gray, seconded |)J Mr Blytb, Mr A, Hayes, ol Waimate, was nominated to fill the vacancy.—The Chairman and Mr Gray declined to be nominated.

; Mr Gray moved, Mr Lee seconded, and it was 'carried—“That Mr Blyth we Mr Boat, and 'ask him to accept the Secretaryship to the eud of the term, and organise a concert, Mr Blyth to arrange terms.” It was also decided to hold the concert during the second week in April, the price of admission to be 2s and Is,

Messrs Gray and Bolton wero appointed a Visiting Committee for the month, and the meeting adjourned.
